Of a travelling salesman/woman per month, instead of annually. Where would someone go if they quit a job and wanted to commence college to receive financial assistance.

What is rent like for an average income earner in the California district.

Thankyou.

Salary

Salary would depend on what she's selling. If you're looking going to base her in Southern California (from your other thread) rent could go anywhere from $750 to $2,000 a month depending on her life style and of course income. Colleges can vary also.....Universities tuition vary from the tens of thousands. Community colleges from the lower thousands.

The rent amounts O2 is quoting is realistic on average.
Universities we're looking at lately are between 16,000 and 26,000 a year, for two semesters.

Quit a job to receive financial assistance to attend college? Have the rules changed? I hope you mean scholarships, and lots of them.

If a seasonal worker tries to take college classes to improve their skills or advance their education during the layoff months, they lose their unemployment benefits for those months. That means no $$$. There is no financial assistance to replace that lost income; not that I know of.
The thought process being that person would therefore not be able to take a full time year 'round job if attending classes, even a temporary seasonal job may pay better, and not require a job search because they have rehire rights every season. So much for improving one's position. It does nothing but encourage people to sit on their asses during the off season.

Salesmen dont go to college! When, in the history of Earth, has any salesman cracked a book? They become salesmen for the same reason women become hookers, theyre lazy.

Cherry Blossom! Read SISTER CARRIE by Theodore Dreiser or DEATH OF A SALESMAN by Arthur Miller.

Ahh James, slight problem, its difficult to know what my story is like as you don't know my characters just yet and from what you have written, ths is exactly why I wanted to jazz it up, I read Death of a Salesman in highschool, kind of made me think of that story as my fiction story came to mind, only very briefly, however, I want to breakaway from the traditional "everyday joe" and break the rules, I couldn't write this story any different than I currently have, its at the very beginning. I have 14 descriptive pages from beginning to end and some brief chapter descriptions but nothing more, its at least 2-3 months away before I am able to release 3 or 4 chapters. Want to make sure that readers get enough material and if I stop writing for too long I can loose the flow. I'll probably have the whole thing written by the time I post.

Thankyou to everyone for your comments, I'll just let him save, that'll just save all the problems :D

Well, first, traveling salespeople like in Death of a Salesman don't exist any more. With the Internet, there's no need for a door-to-door guy selling vacuum cleaners. The only door-to-door sales people that still exist are those selling candy or magazine subscriptions and these are usually scams. What you're really talking about with sales people are those trying to sell something that one company makes, big or small to another company or to a store--or those who work in marketing (selling to the public at large).

If you are going to put your sales person in Southern California, and you want them to survive ('cause, as you see, rent is not cheap!), consider putting them into the movie business. We have lots of production studios and CGI studios. We're talking big studios like Fox and Sony down to little corner buildings housing places that make very small films or assist larger companies in filming.

There's also a lot of clothing and garment businesses in L.A. (but your sales person would have to work downtown), restaurant and restaurant businesses, too. Very big in the food biz, including small franchises like Pinkberry.

Regarding rent--your person can save if they (1) Have a room mate or two or three--but beware. Most apartments near the beach are not big. Most are one or two bedroom at best with a shared bathroom and yes, they still can run $1500 because they're by the beach which is desirable. (2) If the apartment building is old and owned by someone they know, like a relative. They might get a break.

Hope that helps. Keep in mind that while it's good to know this stuff as it can help you create the character, it's best to skim over such details in the actual story. All that's really important is that your character is in "sales" for this or that company, lives in this cramped apartment (no mention of how much he/she pays), and goes on this sales trip. :)

There are plenty of things that must be sold by traveling salesmen. I mean, why do you suppose God invented Business Class on airplanes?

When the local school district bought a few thousand computers do yuh think they went to Computer World to get them?

Our desal plant was designed by some Frenchy frogs.

You remind me of a married couple I met 30 years ago. Their contractor went bankrupt in the midst of building a home for them, so they came to me to build the house based on what work was already done. So I measured the foundation and plumbing pipes and got an idea of how it fit together, and made new plans. So we built the house for them, and as soon as it was completed they dropped a set of original blueprints in our lap (they said they didnt have any) and pissed and moaned about how the house differed from the original plans. You do the same. So good luck with your story.

Again, its a story, there are no real life emotions in this, as long as a convey a great story that has a beginning, middle and end, I am not too sure what there is to worry about.

As a longtime manager of sales people let let me offer up the following:

Most sale folks who travel either work as a territory manager calling on co's that resell their products or work for an independent rep firm. Non college grads, for the most part would make in the mid 30's early in their career. It's possible to make a lot more in the beginning if they are really lucky. The problem is that the degree opens the doors to the really good positions.

I know of women in electronics, clothing, industrial products , cosmetics and insurance.

If they are in a disadvantaged group they could qualify for a PELL grant to attend college or possibly get student loans.

Don't know where you're going with the character but I always like to see characters developed beyond looks.

CB ... it all depends on what you're willing to settle for and when you say 'California district' remember that the state of California is the 3rd largest state in the US. Only Alaska and Texas are physically larger and approximately 40 million people reside in the state. It's a 'nation' sized state.

That being said, lets pick what you might describe as a 'district'. Lets say the city of San Rafael in Marin County about 15 mile north of San Fransisco; and Berkeley, the home of the renowned University of California is also about 15 mile away. Personally it's overrated, I'm a Tulane man

Dominican University is located in San Rafael and is sectarian not religious as it once was and highly rated although not well known.

Rents in this area begin as low as $900 per month and the sky is the limit. To give you an idea of the neighborhood Sean Penn lives with about a mile and a half of me and George Lucas about the same distance. Both of thes men are open and friendly when they shop for groceries and both do that. Just don't ask for an autograph.

There is also an Hispanic Ghetto within 5 miles and a generally black enclave with 8 or 9 miles.

There's my contribution toward trying to help a tad.

I feel though that you're sort of grasping or maybe even gasping for a story line, so let me throw in some unsolicited advice. I'm a member of tthe SWG and I know I begin a story by writing the end first. What do I expect for and from my hero or heroine when it's all over.

Then I write the characters who will help and/or hinder his or her road to getting there. Profiles with names for me. The goodies and the baddies if you will.

Then a few scenes to set the relationships. A red herring or 2 maybe.

You get the idea. It might work for you; it might not ... think about it
