I see a lot of users who have avatars, but I can't figure out how to add my own. I am talking about the profile thumbnail/picture. How do you get them/set them?

You get the option to upload an avatar once you have 100 posts. Welcome to Lit. :)

do quick replies count towards a post? or unique threads?

Just posts. Once you have reached 100 posts you might have to sign out and sign in again to see the option to upload avatar in your User CP.

You also have to talk to Adjudicator.

She's the General Board's Moderator.

Thanks for the help guys. I was thinking it must be a currently locked feature. I plan on putting up a photo of myself for my avatar. I bet that plan won't come back to haunt me :p

How do you subscribe and unsubscribe from topics? I figured it out for one thread, but I haven't been able to figure it out again :p I feel helpless lol.

Just be forewarned. There is a poster here who may post your personal pic long after you've removed it whenever he's butthurt when you disagree with him. He thinks it's a clever ploy that will bother you, even though you could not give a fuck he's doing it. He's not the sharpest tool in the shed.

"Act the way you'd like to be and soon you'll be the way you act." I had a teacher convinced of this. They said you should dress for the profession you desire and soon you will fill the role. I think I disagree. Some people probably are that way, but I feel sorry for those.

An alt is an alternative persona often used for trolling other users, or even for arguing with oneself on the General Board.

Some alts are obvious because of the extreme political views they express and the language they use.

Some are serial alts because the original or earlier persona has been banned for breaching Literotica's rules and they return with a slightly different name e.g. RealAmerican21 because earlier numbered versions have been banned.

Some alts, like mine of jeanne_d_artois, are used by authors to write stories from a different point of view. Jeanne writes from a female point of view. It is now common knowledge that oggbashan and jeanne_d_artois are the same person, but neither of them are the real me.

If you are/were an alt, you would know all this. On the General Board many apparent newbies are actually alts of long established contributors (and some are assholes pretending they aren't the asshole they have always been).

Act the way the cool kids tell you to and you'll do just fine.

I kinda figured they were implying alternative account. I made an account a long time ago and simply forgot the login. I don't think that counts lol. I've been reading lit stories for a few years now. I submitted one but it got rejected do to format and illegal content lol. Shrugs. I made a new submission with this account that is under review. I am not claiming to be anyone other than myself however.
