This is a game about a group of young people in San Francisco who discover an ancient crystal, the Dragonstar. Shortly after finding it, it begins to speak to them telepathically – it is the voice of Dramarius, an elder dragon from another plane of existence. He explains that the dragons once lived openly on Earth, but most were destroyed or trapped in the Ethereal Plane in an age long past. The Dragonstar is their only way to communicate with the human world now, and through it, Dramarius offers them draconic powers to seek out thirteen dragon eggs and destroy the slayers who continue to hunt them. First, however, he educates them in the origin of his people and the wars that nearly destroyed them.

History of the Dragons

Many millions of years ago, in the time of the Dinosaurs, there was a breed of winged reptiles with large brains and intelligent minds. Over countless years of evolution and advancements, these creatures become the world’s first dragons. Eventually, they discovered the existence of the Essence of Life, the energy that flows through everything, binding all matter together. This came about when a young dragon by the name of Djrakoa’Nhuss (Draconus) suffered a fatal wound during one of the feuds that was common among the many dragon clans at the time. He partially passed into the realm beyond the living, where he witnessed the everlasting and intertwining bands of energy that formed all existence.

After suddenly returning to his body, he could still see the bands when he closed his eyes, and he could feel them. Everyone though he was crazy, but for many years he was obsessed, and eventually discovered a way to interact with the bands using sheer willpower. This was the first known instance of magic in the world, which Draconus turned into an art.

After many years of training in the magical arts, Draconus set out to unite the feuding clans, a task he completed within a few short years. As the first Diracles zur Balamut (King of Dragons), Draconus led his people to a new golden age. He earned a gathering of followers, and began teaching them magic as well. His rule lasted for many centuries, the constant flow of magic slowing his aging while increasing his physical skills and healing abilities. Draconus was also the first dragon to breath fire.

After millions of years and many generations of Dragon Kings, a group of rogue warriors banded together and cast a mighty spell that ripped away the world’s tallest peak, Ulik T’rrelok, and sent it into the sky. Then, with the threat of the mountain crashing back down upon the great cities, they planned to take over the kingdom. These dark beings were called the Pa’Rylrrns (Shadowkin), and when the Dragon King and his disciples refused to hand over their throne, the Shadowkin brought the mountain down upon them. Under the impression their wards would protect them, the Shadowkin were horrified for a few singular moments before the impact of the mountain hitting the planet wiped out most of them as well. The resulting shockwave traversed the entire planet, killing 95% of all life and wiping away any traces of the Dragon Empire. Life struggled, but slowly, it returned to the world.

It seemed all the dragons had perished, however, in the last moments before the impact, the Dragon King had cast a spell that had been previously forbidden – he opened a temporal portal to let them escape to a time after the impact. However, they weren’t swift enough in passing through, and the impact shattered the portal, sending all the dragons in the area much farther into the future than they had planned.

When the Dragon King and his disciples emerged, the world was very different – hairless monkeys ruled the world, and the Liras Judaya (Great Continent) had split into separate landmasses. Then came the realization that several of the Shadowkin has passed through as well. Intrigued by the new world, the dragons set out and the people became terrified of them, calling them monsters. Utilizing their psionic abilities, they were able to read minds and learn the languages of the world, but people still feared them.

Eventually, the Shadowkin decided they needed to take human form to put them at ease, and they did just that, eventually coming to take the roles of the various gods of the ancient world. Disgusted with the idea of fooling men into worshipping them as gods, The Dragon King and the few who did not join the Shadowkin slowly earned the trust of the people by constant good deeds. Dragons were revered most of all in China, where they were seen as guardians and protectors.

Though the Shadowkin themselves were corrupt, there eventually came one who was darker than any of them. He went by many names, and ultimately denounced all the other deities, claiming they were false, and that he was the One True God. He slew most of his kin, save for the few who pledged absolute allegiance to him.

The old-but-wise Dragon King and his followers battled the One True God and his minions, eventually leading to a massive spell cast be the Dragon King which ripped open a hole in the fabric of space and sent himself, the One True God, and a number of both their followers into an alternate plane of existence. This new area was a faint image of the real world, with a rather pale look to it. This became known as the Ethereal Plane, with the real world as the Material Plane. Above both was the Astral Plane, the level of existence where the bands of the energies of the Essence of Life can be seen. After this, spirits of the deceased passed through the Ethereal Plane on their way to the Astral Plane, some getting confused and becoming ghosts.

Right before casting the spell that created the Ethereal Plane, the Dragon King, who was actually Dramarius, had created the Dragonstar so that he may return to the world of the living afterwards. However, he soon realized he could only see and talk through the crystal, but could not return. Despite not having a Dragonstar of his own, the One True God had a powerful enough mind to see and talk to people in the Material Plane.

The few dragons that had not been trapped went about their lives, for good or for evil. The good dragons kept the Dragonstar near, while the evil ones carried out various orders by God. Slowly, the evil dragons shunned God, wanting to follow their own paths. He grew very angry, and ordered his last follower to transfer his life force into a female, thus impregnating her. This baby – Jesus Christ – grew up to unite many people, encouraging them to accept the ways of his “father.” Secretly, Christ had a son named Rinas, the first human-dragon hybrid. At a very young age, Rinas developed his powers, and after the “supposed” resurrection of Christ, as ordered by God, killed his father from the shadows, which the people took to mean he had returned to Heaven.

From this came Christianity. To keep people in line, God warned of a fiery place called Hell, where they would go if they did not follow him. To enforce this, he occasionally changed his mental voice and became the persona of Satan. Rinas stayed largely invisible, casting spells wherever necessary to make God’s words seem true. Eventually, God convinced various warriors and knights to become Dragon Slayers, and they hunted down and killed most of the remaining dragons. From the shadows, Rinas would cast spells to depower them so that the Slayers could defeat them.

The few dragons who survived went into hiding, taking human form. Meanwhile, Rinas created heirs to enforce God’s word when he died – as a hybrid, his lifespan was marginally shorter than a full-blooded dragon. With each generation, the dragon powers grew less potent, and the aging grew more similar to humans.

The hiding dragons decided to procreate as well, not wanting their bloodlines to completely die out. They were all fairly old, and knew their time was limited, so they found a young man and bestowed upon him mighty powers to protect their offspring, since they would not live to see them to adulthood. This man was called Merlin, and he was sent out into the world to use his powers for good, knowing he would be called back when the time came for him to assume his role as the caretaker of the hatchlings.

Merlin worked his way into many legends and stories. He helped Uther Pendragon and his son, Arthur, rise to power. Around this time, Niarannid, the last of the original dragons, was on his deathbed, and called upon Merlin, giving him the Dragonstar, along with the thirteen dragon eggs. Shocked that after so many years, the eggs had not hatched, Merlin inspected them carefully, realizing there was a spell cast upon them, freezing them in time within their shells. It was then revealed that one of the dragons had betrayed them, and cast a spell to destroy the eggs, which was countered by Niarannid, resulting in the eggs being frozen in time. Afterwards, a battle ensued, from which Niarannid was the only survivor, but very weak. It took him many years to muster up enough strength to send a message halfway across the world to Merlin.

Unable to free the eggs due to his weakened state, Niarannid begged Merlin to save them, then passed away. For many years after this, Merlin struggled to find a way to free the eggs, but to no avail. Through the Dragonstar, he was able to speak to Dramarius -- aging had no effect in the Ethereal Plane. Still, the eggs remained dormant.

Once the Slayers realized that Merlin’s powers were real and not just tricks, they set out to slay him, thus discovering the eggs. In a last ditch effort to protect the eggs, Merlin cast his most powerful spell ever – all thirteen eggs vanished, scattered around the world in different hiding places. Smiling at the Slayers, Merlin then himself vanished with the Dragonstar. However, just as he faded away, they sent fireballs at him, resulting in a huge explosion.

After telling this story to the characters, Dramarius explains that after the explosion, he lost all contact with the Dragonstar for a period of time. When he could again gaze through it, he saw nothing but the floor of the sea. After that, he was forced to view the world as if he were a ghost, though he was unable to make himself known to anyone on the Material Plane.

After many years of searching for Merlin, Dramarius eventually gave up and consented to just watch the world grow. The Slayers, however, were obsessed with finding the eggs. Convinced others like Merlin existed, they killed anyone who might have magical powers. In centuries to come, this led to people being hanged as witches.

So, there you have it. Our characters become Avatars of the Dragonstar, and are charged with trying to find clues to the location of Merlin and the dragon eggs while also fighting the Slayers. Keep in mind, however, that the Slayers are Christians, and aren’t necessarily evil, they just believe anything relating to dragons to be satanic. They are unaware that they themselves are descended from Christ, or that he himself was a dragon. They believe their draconic powers to be of divine origins, not due to dragon blood in their veins.

I will post my characters as well as the intro tomorrow.
