avatar size

Has the acceptable avatar size changed?

I can't get my old one to work

I don't think so. Mine is still working but I haven't tried to change it.

I noticed it let me keep the old one- but then an awful love of people have much smaller ones now:( I liked our old av size. I know my current av was bigger before.

Maybe we could ask Manu about the AV size. I liked the bigger Av'S too.

I saw an advisory note somewhere to say NEW avatars will be restricted by file size and/or pixel dimensions. Existing avatars will be retained UNTIL swapped, re-loading an old avatar requires meeting new size restrictions - but I can't find the advisory :D

EDIT: Size is 150 x 150 pixels (I think that's the same) KB size is 15kb - I think that is smaller.

Definitely.
I had the same problem when I decided to change mine.

Its been reduced by around a quarter. Can;t remember the exact pixels. But I think its 15k now max. size.

Bummer isn't it.

Some of the AVs just don't work in small sizes.

The filesize has been reduced from 20KB to 15KB but the pixel dimensions were returned to 150x150 after a short period of being reduced to 100x100.

The new filesize is going to be a problem for animated avatars, because you can't really change the compression of GIFs

however, still image, JPeG avatars just need to be resaved with a slight change in the JPeG compression.

If you use Irfanview, changing the JPeg Comression is simple -- choose Save As, JPeg format and click the Advanced button to change the compression.

i'm kinda new and i can't figure out how to upload and avatar in the first place... hwen i go to "edit" them, it just tells me that i don't have one and has the little cirlce that says" no current avatar" marked, and ther'es like no button to upload one! anyone know what i might need to do???

Angel, you don;'t get an Avatar until you've reached 100 posts.

Just keep talking, you'll soon get there.

There is a way around the problem for those with animated gifs.

A free online animation site will allow you to rework an animated gif.
Perhaps shrinking dimensions, or cropping the original will decrease the file size. Optimizing is another option.

For those who need it, Good Luck!

The site in question is: www.gifworks.com

True, GIFWorks or an animation program will allow some manipulation of animated AV sizes, but the old 20KB size limit was hard to meet with a full 150x150 pixel sized AV that had more than three or four frames. 15KB will be just that much harder to meet for those whoalready squeezed as much dross out of their AV as they could to make the 20KB limit.

Not impossible to accomplish, just 25% harder than before.

From what I could understand, this is to compensate for the slighly heavier graphics on the boards, and also because now there's a cool larger image we can have in our boards' profile. It's not a bad trade-off. ;)

Phew, for a moment I thought I was going to have to re-size my boobs again :)
Let's face it!

When it comes to women, the Internet's default is set to the inflatable variety.
