Which do you prefer for your car, an automatic or manual transmission?

I never understood the purpose of having a manual transmission, they seem like such an annoying hassle because of the clutch and everything.

Manual transmission means you are driving. Automatic means you are steering. Driving is way more fun and interesting than steering.

And you are a tinfoil hat stalker.

Peace.

What boy next door said. The only crap thing about manual is driving in town with all the stops and starts, the open road is way more fun!

Having to shift up and down depending on your rpm is a real pain in the ass.

Automatics rob horsepower and are heavier. Modern ones perhaps less so. I don't like the level of manifold vacuum or a computer chip deciding what gear I want to be in. If you top out in a gear in an automatic and don't ease up it can engage the next gear harshly and shorten the life of the automatic. Most manual transmissions last well over 250,000 miles. Also by slipping the clutch a manual is infinately variable as far as gear ratio. Manuals have much better road feel.

I grew up driving a manual, finally got an automatic, I really have no preference. It is just that automatics are always on the sales lot, and the SO can't drive a manual.

I think it's all in what you get used to.

I have two manuals and two slushboxes. The sticks suck balls in stop-and-go traffic, period. The old auto I drive like a stick - I make most of its gear selections for it. But it's also arguably the best auto ever built, so it doesn't care. It's liable to get a manual valve body if and when it gets rebuilt.

I can drive both. We used to have all manual transmission cars, but when our son became old enough to drive, the thought of teaching him to drive a stick .

Now that he's out of the house, it's hard to find a manual around here so we have automatics.

He stalks tinfoil hats? That's just twisted.

Depends on the car for me. If it's a sports car, manual other than that an automatic. This car is an in between car but I got an auto because of driving into the city & dealing with traffic.

L:rose:

Has to be automatic, because I can't drive stick.

Well, not that kind of stick, anyway.

My first car was manual. I loved that car - a 1986 Honda Accord hatchback that could fit everything I owned.

The axles finally gave out on it. My next car was a piece of shit, figuratively speaking (as far as I know.) It was an automatic. So was every car since then. Part of me misses driving the old stick-shift...

I tried to teach my wife how to drive it, back when we were still dating. She couldn't figure it out and gave up very quickly, partially because I got scared she would destroy my transmission and I got impatient.

The more complex a machine and the more parts it has, the more likely it is to break.

My new people carrier is an auto, the first one I've ever driven. They used to be a rarity here, but are more common these days. Probably because they've improved the fuel efficiency. This little bugger is as cheap to drive as many hybrids.

Can't say I miss the clutch.

I am driving a 34 yr old car with the original auto box.
For the last 4 years it hasn't had a kickdown cable connected, so it has been driven with the gearbox pressures all wrong.....but it has never missed a beat.
Since owning it, I have never had to top up the gear oil (checked weekly), nor has it had a gear oil change.
Next week, I am finally going to fit a new kickdown cable and service the box.

My guess is that after doing that, it will fuck up
