Hey everyone,

I don't usually post here very often, but one of my goals this year is to post more frequently on erotica boards as I'm becoming more and more interested in becoming a self-sufficient self-published author (as I have a lot of fun writing erotica) and would like to give back to the community with my participation innit.

I was also thinking of a fun group experiment I'd like to try to coordinate - with your help.

I've written one relatively short novella (to date), and that experience taught me that getting reviews for your book when you're a literary nobody is bloody difficult. As part of an experiment, I was completely upfront with my close circle of friends about the fact that I was writing an erotica book, and though they each and all said they would read it and review it - they ultimately didn't.

Now, I don't blame them (well, I do - bastards) but I can't do so seriously. What I would like to do, however, is solve the problem by putting together a group of active reviewers that, once or twice a month, collectively read and review a story/book and either publicly posts positive reviews/feedback or privately posts negative reviews/feedback (in order to promote sales or promote author improvement - trying to avoid and limit negative shittyness here).

This is not a circle jerk, mind you. I would like authors to be as honest and as brutal with others as they would be in reviewing their own work.

I'll reserve this space for participating authors and post announcements/etc here.

WHO'S WITH ME
(cricket noises)

tl;dr

  • If you want your erotica story/book given an honest and thorough review, post here.

  • Positive reviews will be posted publicly (3+/5) and negative reviews (<3/5) will be privately messaged/posted in this thread to avoid tanking sales.

  • Reviews must be honest and the brutal (and hopefully comedic, at least) harshness of the review will be decided upon by each individual.

Requirements;
  • Have at least one book or story e-published (so we can review it and give you publicity).

Who knows? This might turn into something bigger.

PARTICIPATING AUTHORS (and genres of preference);

lovecraft68 (no explicit rape. Rough sex/mild reluc is fine)

MARCH STORY REVIEW;
The Breaking of Allison by lovecraft. [4/5]
"This is an excellent venture into hardcore BDSM territory by (lovecraft68). Normally BDSM not my cup of tea, but the story was a page turner. Only shame there wasn't more".
Dirty, Sexy Girls by Bebeslut.

1. Your group would need to be pretty genre specific for all to be willing to continue with it.

2. You would need to provide the texts to each other for free to keep folks willing to do it.

3. You'd really need to post the reviews on the distributor sites rather than here to have any benefit.

But, yes, it's a good synergy idea.

I find it very difficult to read other people's work when I'm trying to write my own.

I find it damn near impossible to write my own work when I'm reading other people's.

Sorry.

:(

Thanks for the feedback - hadn't thought of those points.

i) I'll include authors in the main post and what genres they're comfortable reviewing.

ii) I'm hoping most authors realize that a few free copies is the cost of the free marketing/feedback this entails.

iii) Yeah, positive reviews go on distributor sites/negative reviews stay here (or are pm'd).

You can also hook into social networks that focus on readers-- such as exist on twitter or livejournal or librarything-- and offer copies of your book to be reviewed. Look for readers in your genre who show some thoughtfulness in their reviews.

Look for bloggers who read and review your kind of stuff. Offer them copies. Some bloggers do giveaways.

But I think something like he is suggesting is the easiest to actually get done--and one of the least-employed methods of getting reviews.

I'm trying to scrounge up some reviews on one. A BDSM piece currently on Amazon.

I'm willing to give it a shot reviewing anything aside from GM or non human.

I also wont look at anything that is flat out rape material. Rough sex or some reluctance is fine, but not the actual act of rape.

However as Stella pointed out it's hard to get any of your stuff done if you're reading other people's stuff so it also depends on how long it is.

Can you post a review on Amazon without owning a kindle or buying the book from them?

Yes to both.

and if you ever want to buy a book w/o buying a kindle there is a free kindle/pc app that puts the kindle on your computer. That's what I have I refuse to buy one.

Awesome! I'll add your name to the list at the top.

Sweet. Do you have any stories you'd like reviewed?

I'm not ashamed: I'll swap positive reviews on Amazon with anyone.

I have four stories there, under the name George Boxlicker, besides a novel. I self published the stories but the novel was published by a British company and is available in other places. I would appreciate a review, with the understanding the stories are strictly stroke, and I would want an honest review on that basis. Also, there is a thread on the discussion forum there about somebody wanting to read smutty stories. I believe mine are just what the person wants, but I can't mention them.

The novel is stroke also, but has a plot and characterization, and is about 26,000 words long.

Mine are strokers, too, what I call "Porn with a Plot." What would you like me to review?

Are you just looking for bullshit 5-star reviews to help sell a piece-of-shit book? Or are you looking for honest evaluations to help you improve your writing?

If the latter, then Lit already provides an in-depth revolving review forum called the Story Discussion Circle, for stories at least. You show up and review three of the group's stories, and that entitles you to have one of your stories reviewed by the group. It's a very useful and underutilized service.

What I am looking for are honest reviews of my stories as stroke stories. I believe that, within those limits, they are good, and I hope to make a few bucks off them.

I have participated in Story Discussion, and it is very good for somebody who wants to write great works of erotic literature, but that is not my goal. I believe I can do that too, but that is not why I am writing on Literotica and what I am trying to sell.

I have five items on Amazon. One is a short novel (26,000 words) named Karen's Happy Birthday. This was on Literotica for a while, but I pulled it when it was published, and it is available on other sites than Amazon. I also have four short stories. These are: Annie's Neglected Pussy, Naughty Nurse and Hot Blonde Student, and those stories appear on Lit. under those names. The fourth short story is Stephanie Comes of Age, which is on Lit. as Stephanie's Eighteenth Birthday.

I don't know how I can read something and leave a comment though. I do not have a Kindle and am not otherwise a customer of Amazon.

Broccoli.

I sampled some of the stories people want reviews for, and as a group they arent impressive. They remind me of an article I saw in the paper yesterday. A local guy got an award from his organic gardeners club for his 4 inch broccoli. The broccoli looks good, but 4 inches? So what! WAL-MART sells tons of 4 inch broccoli. Saturday I harvested one thats 10 inches in diameter, plus a 5 pound cabbage, and blueberries the size of dimes.

So what! is whats missing from most LIT stories.

Like...you go to prison and get cornered in the shower, the leader of the pack wants some of your ass...but cant get it up....and the whole world is watching.

Or...you get a rare invitation to a private reception with your favorite author, spend the day getting your shit together for the occasion, get lost in a rainstorm on the way, and end up in a ditch in the middle of nowhere at night. You spy a dim light far away, and slog thru the rain and mud towards it. Its a rustic sort of lodge out in the forest. You rap on the door, and look like a wet, muddy dog when your favorite author opens the door.

I can't believe you could find an edible stalk of broccoli that is ten inches in diameter. Even four inches is quite big. If you are referring to the broccoli flowerets, that would be another matter.

Anyhow, back to the subject. As I see it, there are two kinds of stories on Lit. One is the literary story, which has all the things a work of literature should have and is erotic. Then there is the stroke story, which is what I write, and which is the most popular on Lit. This is a description of a sex act or a series of sex acts without worrying about character development or plot or other literary qualities.

I'm speaking of the floret head. Nine-12 inch diameters arent uncommon, and they taste great. Plenty of water boosts the size.

A story need not be literary to be interesting. My story, A GIRL FOR ALL SEASONS, involves two boys who break-in an electronics show to checkout the android exhibit. The androids are female-like and exhibited as the 4 seasons. Spring is dressed in baseball suit, Fall is a farmer with pitchfork, etc. The boys try them out and get a surprise.

I think I'd prefer the 4-inch broccoli.
