so is it just me or is there no way to access an authors works from their home page? I have tried several different ways and I don't seem to be able to access anyone's stories.

Click on "Works"? If you mean the Forum profile page, no, you can't get to stories from here (as far as I know). The Forum, the Chat, and the Stories are separate things, linked by a common account but not much else. You'd have to separately search for the person in the Stories section. That's why many of us link to our stories in our Forum signatures.

Go to "Stories" at the bottom of this page, scroll down to the bottom, find "Search Authors". Put in their account name, you'll get to a page from which you can get to their Account Page. Voila, stories!
