Today is a public holiday in Oz - yay! :D

And there were Europeans there before 'our' Europeans. The Dutch found the West Coast and ignored it as being useless. The French intended to claim it for France but got there too late.

Still Australia Day is worth celebrating for the country Australia has become. Run up a flag at the Eureka stockade. Flog a convict at Norfolk Island. Barbecue a few prawns. Sink a few tinnies. Swat a few flies.

Listen to the Kookaburras laugh.

But don't wake the Koalas. They get grumpy in daytime.

Throw another shrimp on the barbie for me.

Happy Australia Day weehooooo

I'll drink a few cans of Fosters just to celebrate.

Wish I was back there surfing at Palm Beach, or brewing a billy of tea beside a billabong.

Or even panning for gold and finding 50 cents worth after 8 hours work. 50 cents of gold you found by yourself seems worth far more. Shame the 'Miner's Right' costs much more than that.

Koalas are nocturnal.

They get woken up by zoo keepers so tourists can go "Ahhh!" and take pictures.

Wouldn't you be pissed off?

Og (who has been soaked by one annoyed koala and bitten by another in the interests of providing photo opportunities for tourists)

In 1606 Willem Janszoon and his crew sailed southeast beyond Papua New Guinea and found Australia. This was not only the first time that Europeans encountered Australia, but also the first time Europeans encountered Australia's native people, the Aborigines. The contact did not go very well. Nine crewmembers of Jantzoon's ship, the Duyfken, were killed in a fight as the crew attempted to trade. This last may be why the Dutch decided that Australia was useless.

Happy Australia Day!!!

Nice quiet day here, even a bit cool with a steady, slow rain. Too wet to barbecue outside but it's a lot better than the 41C of last week.

If an American, being polite, says to a visiting Aussie he's met five minutes before, 'I really hope to visit your country some day." the Aussie responds, "Then you must stay with us." and writes down their address.

I've had this happen numerous times, and when I visited Australia, a friend from ten years before arranged my entire visit.

Great people!

Happy Australia Day. Wish I was there to join you.

Somebody go by the "Fortune of War" at The Rocks in Sydney, the first pub in Australia, and have a drink for Ted.

I looove public holidays! [I think you call em Bank holidays in the UK - weird]

Yeah, how un-Australian is it to rain on Australia day!! Where I live, we have 280 days of sunshine a year. So Barbie under covers then!
