Hello Aussies...

Well - while not an Aussie I am headed there for a couple of weeks. To Sydney. Anyone want to make some suggestions of not to miss things while I'm there? Here or PM is alright if you don't want to fill up the thread with it.

Thanks!

I think you may have left it a bit late for Burt to do.

we did have someone on Lit who was casting there own parts for replica locomotives.... cant think if it was Steamer or Don .....know it was a NSW male if that helps at all.
and from the photos I seen I am sure he could easly knock something up for the Cit

Nope, it wasn't Don . . . he is entirely deficient of mechanical skills ;)

But we have a couple of car collectors here and I think they may use Phoenix Foundry at Uralla NSW for that sort of replacement work.

Remind me next week and I will check it out for you . . . this next few days is going to be extremely crazy . . . :)

DILL!! What's up?

I think a harbour cruise and visiting the Zoo is a must.

Hi Dillinger . . . yep! it will take you about a fortnight to see Sydney. Check out:

1. The long city walk

Start at Oxford Street corner of Elizabeth Street, walk north through Hyde Park to the Natural History Museum (Half a day if you're very quick)
then back to the Park and up to the Archibald Fountain,
chuck a right (east) and head past the Law Courts and north along Macquarie Street past the Barracks, State Government House and the Mitchell Library (couple of hours)
then across the Domain (a park) to the NSW Art Gallery (half a day, not a bad couple of restaurants),
then north up to Lady Macquarie's Chair overlooking Woolloomoolloo Bay,
then around the Harbour Walk way through the Botanic Gardens, (check out the Pyramid) to the Opera House (expensive restaurants)
then south to Circular Quay and the Manly ferries (wait, that is another day trip of its own)
to the western side at George Street, north past the Orient Hotel, home of traditional Jazz in Sydney most nights,
then along the western Quay to the Garrison Chruch and the Hero of Waterloo pub across the road from the Walsh Bay tourist complex,
continue around to a couple of theatres and the Loft night spot (techno music, check out rising star Jimi Polar)
then return back the same way to Circular Quay,
head south up George Street to Market Street, the centre of CBD retailing, and then underground at Myers for four (?) blocks if the street is getting too much, or stay on the surface until Barrack Street and the Queen Victoria Building (QVB) with the performing clock on every hour, exit at the southern end to see the Sydney Town Hall,
then south down George Street past numerous cinemas to Dixon Street and Chinatown on your right (west), good food reasonable prices,
then back onto George Street and look out for Central Railway Station on left (east), a large sandstone edifice with a distinctive clocktower, you can get suburban trains from there.

2. A day at Manly and Manly Beach; best done by ferry from Circular Quay, gives fabulous views from on Sydney Harbour, the prettiest harbour in the world.

3. A day at Bondi Beach, in summer the south end is the best place to go, food places tend to expensive. If you're in a car/taxi then a run up to Watson's Bay for lunch/dinner at Doyle's Restaurant on the Bay or simply a beer at the Watson's Bay Hotel is fabulous, watch sunset over Sydney Harbour and you'll never leave.

4. A day in the CBD, not the long walk but in the retail sector and Centrepoint Tower, Powerhouse Museum, the Maritime Museum, Darling Harbour.

5. The western Harbour, by Rivercat upstream under the Sydney Harbour Bridge to Parramatta by regular ferry service.

Am a bit out of touch with the night spots. Hope that helps. :)

Yup - its me. Hi Orlanth! Adding Cruise and Zoo to my list.
I've only been to Sidney twice as it is a 5 hour flight away, so I haven't seen much.Maybe Gil can offer ideas, he lives there.

Wow - Don... excellent info... thanks!

I'm actually travelling on business - so I'm only going to have one weekend free - and maybe a couple nights, depending on how late we work. Will try to see/do as much as I can.

Orlanth is correct, the Zoo is a must.

There are also the regular inner harbour ferry services that take about an hour to run their circuit into the bays between the Bridge and the Sydney Heads. Could take the best part of a day to do them all.

Check out the theatre programmes, because Boy from Oz, the story of local boy Peter Allen is back in town with a new cast, fresh from successes overseas.

Also Dusty, the Dusty Sprinfield story has just opened in Sydney.

Music is good at The Basment, local diverse Jazz hangout, but check out the events pages on the Thursday (?) papers, like the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH).

Oh, and just so that you realise the size of Oz . . . we are about the same size as continental America, so 'doing Oz in a fortnight' is a wank . . . ;)

YAY ALL ozzies are car enthusiasts.

those that arnt have only just got off the boat/plane :p

Wasn't into cars myself. Now bitten by the bug.

Have the Falcon for the family car.... and a nice little HPI for the cruising and the modding and the racing and the looking cool ;)

Tuuurrrbbbboooooo all the way baby

Yes - I know there's no way I should expect to even see a fraction of what's there. I'll pretty much stick to what's in Sydney - given the limited amount of time probably even what's close to the hotel - in North Sydney.

So you're saying it takes you a fortnight to wank?
