Mine is a deeply philosophical question. Why are most refridgerators hinged on the right side but microwaves on the left?

Or why do revolving doors always turn the wrong way?

Do you know a left handed dentist?

Most refrigerators can be supplied with doors hinged on the left but at an extra cost. So can kitchen cabinets.

Yes, my dentist is left handed. She had to use right-handed equipment until about a couple of years ago when her surgery was reequipped. The new equipment can be moved from left to right-handed operation in a matter of seconds.

Yes Og we have a left handed fridge and the kitchen is generally set up for left handers as all except one of the family is left handed.

My brother is ambidextrous with a bias to the right because he found that life was easier that way. He paints and draws with either hand. For detailed work he uses whichever hand is convenient.

Some years ago he broke his right hand when skiing. He recorded a left-hand signature at his bank. They accept either signature and will, if asked, produce left-handed cheque books.

I describe myself as ambi-sinistrous because I am equally incompetent with both hands. My brother has considerable artistic talent. I had to give up art because my hands couldn't produce any acceptable results except on a large scale with big brushstrokes. I'm better than him at back scenes for drama. Anything smaller than six feet by six feet and my limitations are obvious. He is very good at small canvases, say 10 by 12 inches, and even minatures.

Is there a term for someone who is predominately right handed, but left handed for seemingly random things. I'm right handed but always wear my watch on my right wrist and learnt to fire shotguns and rifles left handed.

Maybe it's because my mother was left handed and when young simply copied how she held things?

Sinistrous is the opposite. Ambisinistrous is equally INcompetent with either hand.

Sinister comes from "left-handed", and "the left hand path" i.e. Black Magic as opposed to White Magic.

Left-handers have had a bad press for thousands of years.

Yes I guess they have. I'd heard the expression kack-handed came from soldiers serving overseas. In Arabic kack meant shit and the muslim locals were disgusted by British soldiers eating with their left hands. Muslims apparently eat with the right hand only and clean their arses with the left.

In a desert environment, it wasn't always possible to wash after shitting. Thus, Muslims always used the left hand to wipe their arses with. Only the right hand was permitted in the communal cooking pot. Thus, the sentence of having the right hand of a thief amputated, was a sentence to death by starvation.

I'm a recovered lefty ... well not really, I was forced to write, right handed because of ink pens and I wrote in the forehand lefty style as opposed to the upside down and backward lefties. Could be messy with true 'ink pens' but a true lefty in all other things
