Anyone have any thoughts about how to get lube off the trackball on my blackberry?

It's not important how it got there...

...but apparently the little thing is particularly reliant upon friction. Which, if you are familiar with its uses, lube is pretty effective at reducing. FUCK!

I hate that this stupid thing controls my life! Ironically enough my 30 day warranty just ran out and I didn't get insurance because I am hard-headed, cheap, and just plain fucking stupid! And before anyone suggests just going to the store to see if they can fix it - I hate walking into a verizon store more than being punched in the throat.

This could be one of the most retarded ways anyone has ever fucked up a phone. On that note... anyone have a good cell-phone-fuck-up story that might cheer me up?

What kind of lube is it (water-based, silicone, oil)?

Have you tried holding the ball steady with something (tweezers, needlenose pliers, etc.), taking a q-tip just dampened with a mild soap solution or electronics cleanser, alternately rubbing and rotating the ball, and then maybe going over it again with a dry q-tip or three?

Have you read this article on cleaning the trackball? That person had a different problem, but I'd imagine you'd use the same procedure of removing the ball, doing your cleaning and reassembling.

Holy Shit! Thanks a million for the help! I'm going to give this a shot, but it looks like it should solve my problem. Guess I could have done some searching of my own before I freaked out on here. BUT...

...Like I said it was lube, and the events leading up to the incident may or may not have had something to do with the reason this website was the most convenient place for me to start.

Oh dear...so far I don't have one of those stories of my own, but as a blackberry user myself, I'm sure it's coming.....:D

Let us know how that works out for you, I may have need of the solution someday!

Sorry for your troubles, but thanks for sharing the story.:D

Rubbing alcohol might be just the trick and unless you douse the thing, you shouldn't screw up the electronics.

No, do not apply any kind of liquid to it while it is in the blackberry. Follow the linked instructions above, always remove it first before cleaning it and then replacing it back into the device.

I never got lube on a phone, but I did wash one once. I decided to throw my wife's pants into the washer with my stuff, because it's a waste to wash only half a load, and could not figure out why I kept hearing a loud thunk sound... I thought it was outside, so I never investigated. Turns out that she does not empty her pockets when she takes her pants off nearly as often as I do...

And by the way, taking the damn thing apart didn't work. It's silicone based lube and even though I got it all off the trackball, there must be some left in the mechanism inside the handset cause it's still not working right. It's better, but I don't think it'll ever be the same. Looks like I'm headed to the godforsaken verizon store.

^^^^ x 2 This is the way to go...power off and remove the battery...use a q-tip dipped in isopropyl alcohol on the trackball while spinning it. This should do the trick. I would test it out before covering the ball with alcohol there is a small chance it can degrade the surface of the ball.

Oh by the way I can't be held responsible if you F-up your device! :D

I had my phone do a swan dive off the top shelf of my desk and into a glass of water (perfect 10, no less) when I turned off the alarm that morning. No snooze for me on that day.

/Good luck with your phone!

Don't use anything but alcohol on it. just in small amounts... It will take a few days but leave it laying on the face of the phone to help the lube settle to the front of the phone and take a paper towel damp with rubbing alcohol and move the ball around which will clean the ball. try to leave it face down as much as possible... Should get most of it off. I don't believe the rollerballs are removable.

I have gotten lube on mine before too lucky it was just on the keys!

I think I might post a topic ask HOW you get lube ON a blackberry?

Sounds like it's quite a common occurence. :)

I was leaning over to grab my phone since it was ringing, and got "bucked" and I knocked the open bottle over on it.
