This thread will probably turtle because people here can't/won't type or pronounce Attawapiskat.

But if it doesn't, what does their latest crisis say?

11 young people in a community attempted suicide the same night.

Eskimo Cult?

News reports talk about alcoholism, drug use, poor living conditions, but why is nobody facing the incest and rape that goes on...to me that is the root of the problem...the kids have nothing to live for and want to get away from the abuse.

This we actually reported in by UK news agencys

Maybe the government shouldn't have demanded their money back...

;)

Just sayin'.

Or maybe the band should elect leaders that don't steal?

OTTAWA – The federal government is demanding the Attawapiskat First Nation pay back $1.8 million after an audit determined the band could not account for the money that was supposed to be spent on housing.

Are they fenced-in or free-range natives?

Armed mounties forcing them to shelter in place?

Pretty much fenced in given the location.

Years ago the govt moved them to a river delta on James bay then found out that the place is a flood zone.

The govt wanted them to move again but they dug their heels in and said, fuck you...you put us here, deal with it.
But its a place of no hope, something has to be done, and soon. But. you know the govt...does no wrong and is always right

Wonderful story, though untrue.

Now they're arguing what constitutes a suicide pact.

Sounds like Attiwatispak is a suburb of the GB.

Several youth in Attawapiskat First Nation were brought into the local hospital on Monday and might have been members of a suicide pact, according to a deputy grand chief who represents the reserve, which declared a state of emergency after 11 suicide attempts in a single day over the weekend.

Reached late Monday evening, Nishnawbe Aski Nation Deputy Grand Chief Anna Betty Achneepineskum told The Globe and Mail that police advised her they are investigating a potential suicide pact among youth in the remote Ontario community. Ms. Achneepineskum said her understanding is that while the 11 attempts on Saturday are believed to be separate incidents, the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service were alerted to a group of youth that may have been planning to take their own lives Monday evening.

“I have no idea as to the extent of the conversations. I just know that the children were overheard talking about conspiring to commit suicide tonight,” Ms. Achneepineskum said. “If that’s not a suicide pact, I don’t know what is.”

Okay, how about you give us a backgrounder based on your many years of Reserve living?

I have been living next door to a couple of them for 45 years and working on one for the last 25.
I know plenty of native cops from other reserves.
My daughter is a social worker on a self governed native community in the far far north.

We have hosted the Attiwapiskat residents for many years when they are evacuated for spring flooding.

At times, poverty is but a material absence: poverty of the spirit can be more detrimental. There is, however, a continuous see-saw relationship with the two. How difficult that must be.

In the back of the pews, an elder strums a guitar; he needs solace and hope, and he strives to bring these alive. He is an example of perseverance. In some communities, the drum remains silent—our supposedly heathen practices once outlawed, forbidden. Not only is the drum the heartbeat of the people, it is the heartbeat of the earth. When struck, its vibrations travel the circumference of the world. When the drum dies, the earth is diminished.

In some places in the States tribes are making a concerted effort to have their languages and cultures taught to the tribal children in school. In the areas where this is taking place there are much higher graduation rates.

I did not read anything about that. It would seem until fairly recently the schools were more Catholic in nature. Hopefully the Shannen's Dream campaign will make a difference.

Residential schools, the operation entrusted to the Churches, Anglican and Catholic.

They were pretty brutal...children were buried out back and their parents never knew where...trust your government.
