D.C. Air Defense Tightened Due to Threat
By JOHN J. LUMPKIN

WASHINGTON (AP)--Air defenses around the nation's capital have been strengthened amid a heightened terrorism alert and a warning from CIA director George Tenet that al-Qaida attacks could occur as early as this week, defense officials said Wednesday.
Avenger anti-aircraft missiles have been stationed around Washington, along with extra radars, and the Air Force has stepped up its combat air patrols over the capital, they said.
The CIA director said the information suggests the attack may involve a ``dirty bomb''--a weapon that spreads radioactive material over a wide area--or chemical or poison weapons. Officials last week worried the attack could be timed to coincide with the hajj, a Muslim holy period this week.

Be Alert But Not Alarmed

Authorities have urged American Jewish leaders to be “alert but not alarmed” at the Bush administration’s decision to raise the nation’s terrorism alert level from yellow to orange, the second highest on the country’s five-level scale.
In New York the state of alert was plainly visible. Masked anti-terror police with machine guns stood guard Saturday outside the city’s landmark Temple Emanu-El.
Officials said they are unusually worried both because of recent electronic intercepts that suggest an imminent attack as well as the sheer volume of reports that have been coming in mentioning Jewish targets.
“This is a full-court press,” one FBI official told Newsweek about the bureau’s sudden outreach to Jewish groups. “There’s real anxiety about this.”
In New York City, the NYPD contacted security directors of public and private facilities with a request that they closely evaluate their physical plant infrastructure, specifically as it pertains to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.
