Lavington: On Monday (Jan 3) Donna Macklan went to visit a friend. Two people in their twenties viciously assaulted Donna, knocking her out of her wheel chair and hitting her with a shovel.

Whilst they were doing this they screamed “you hermaphrodite”. There is a full report in today’s Border Mail.

Donna Macklan was beaten and abused in our community because of her gender identity. This is completely and totally unacceptable.

Or it should be.

We live in a community where LBGTI people have a well founded fear for their safety in public.

This morning I walked hand in hand with my partner into the Birralee shopping centre. I’m male, she’s female. I got to experience a simple pleasure that many of my gay mates would be unable to without some degree of trepidation.

On a Friday night, they might well be taking their lives into their hands.

And lets face it, if you’re transgendered it’s worse.

There are a few people prepared to speak out against the more overt signs of homophobia in our community. It doesn’t stop a certain local Christian Democrat identity screaming “It’s Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve” every time I see him, but at least now he’s widely regarded as a bloody idiot.

Community sentiment on transphobia lags way behind. You’re more likely to see the local paper print letters debating which prayers are more powerful than anything condemning bigotry.

I don’t want to live in a transphobic community, do you? It seems we’ve got one of two options, leave, or change it. And leaving is a bit of a cop out.

But then again, maybe this section should be deleted all the way again ? cause right now I think this section of the so-called GLBT Chatter news and issues has served its purpose. I don't happen to agree with Stella on this matter, but you are WAY the fuck out of line by screaming that anything she's said is gender related. YOU are the one who brought that up, not Stella.

BTW, before you start tossing words like misogynistic around, you'd better get your definitions straight. Misogyny is the hatred of women, something nobody has ever accused Stella of before. You on the other hand, based on your immediate use of gender & orientational arguments, certainly can be.

Well, since we are at this lovely site and custom titles. Then it seems to me, what gets people fired up, is eureka . My custom title. But since you think I am not defending any one. Then you are wrong, I am clearly outspoken for the rights of people getting married to each other. Whether it is men or women who loves each other.
