Atrocious comments and users on the site

Hi all, I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this, but wasn't sure where else it would fit.

Today, I noticed a user had made a particularly awful comment on one of the LW stories. Out of interest, I looked at some of the other stories from the day and the same user had commented...

The user is called "Desecration" (ironic). Here are (a few of) their comments from different stories in the last two days alone:

- Diversity of any races doesn't work. You either have a "nation" of one people (ethne) or you're screwed and your civilization is dying. lol
- I give praise to Satan and deny resurrection. Christianity is the false religion! So are Islam and Judaism, probably Zoroastrianism. Why is human sacrifice taboo, when so many useless people are taking up space?
- Everyone got AIDS. Diversity still sucks, in any form. Unions and insurance raise costs to consumers. Jesus was half-Roman and smoked a lot of weed. Can I insert any other heresies? Because my soul belongs to SATAN, fuck you God and Christ! haha

I mean, these went through moderation and were deemed OK!?

Reporting/deleting comments does absolutely nothing to dissuade the user from posting such hate, and I'm sure people have seen many other similarly notorious commentors. Their comments get deleted, and they simply continue on other stories.

Why does the site allow such users to abuse what is a wonderful platform for sharing work? I feel like a "Three strikes and you're out" sort of rule would work well, though I don't know the practical implications of such a scheme.

I believe that the difference between humans and animals is simply that we can express ourselves and not only that: we can even record complex feelings in written form. Of course, there is a wide range of feelings and ways to articulate them. This can be overwhelming for some people.

What I find disturbing is the number of users on this site that only comment on the politics thread.

Some of those only post in the politics threads and no where else and all they want to do is spread their views.

Yeah it does get annoying at times. Some comments come up for no rhyme or reason. I guess you have to treat satan worship as any other religion. He did bring attention to this "When so many useless people are taking up space".
So yes a wanker, an attention seeker. The internet has opened the door for all good and bad. Should we scroll past perhaps, but what happens when all of a sudden these asinine views (IMO) are rampant. Then we are saying "How did we get here ? " So yes it's good to have a discussion about something.

Hubby just laughed at the trolls commenting anonymously on his story. Personally, I find them sad and pitiable.

Per the original post asking why the site allows such comments:

The moderators are not censors, shutting down free speech. They seem to pro-actively delete only comments which threaten the author directly. But all other disparaging speech around the story quality or subject matter is a matter of personal opinions. Some people, hateful as they might be to you, have their own opinions about a subject. So, it becomes a question of "Who decides which comments about any particular fetish should be deleted?"

Should the moderators delete all comments disparaging inter-racial? How about anti-gay, or anti-lesbian, or anti-trans comments?.

Maybe a female reader was abused as a teen by her father or brother and finds all incest stories to be over-the-top offensive, and she'll post a hateful comment. Should that be allowed? Or should her opinion remain for others to read?

As I said, the moderators take down person attack comments, and they allow the story author to decide what other comments they want deleted.

Personally, I allow my readers to post whatever comments they want, and I (personally) do NOT delete any. The moderators chose to delete one memorable comment from one of my stories which said, "EAT SHIT AND DIE!" I wore that as a badge of pride, my story having evoked such an emotional reaction! But the moderators didn't find it as amusing.
