Maybe it's a little early to start this thread but I'm in the mood so...

August 13th will be the day of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games that return to Athens this year.

Let's pretend they'll get all the stadiums and the infrastructure ready in time (hell, there's got to be one functional gym in Athens whose roof doesn't leak when it's raining), will you watch live, will you stay informed about the Games ?
Are you excited or don't you even care about all the hoolabaloo ?

Are you rooting for your countrie's athletes or for any particular athletes no matter what country they're from ?

(But please also stay true to the Lit Olympics why are on their way and continue to be :) )

So maybe I'll start with a little hommage to The Games:

'GIANT
To be a Giant. This has forever been our passion, this desire to be a Giant.
Not to stand on one's shoulders or to have one for a friend, though these may be fortunate things.
But to be one.
Giants step over barriers that seem never ending.
They conquer mountains that appear insurmountable.
Giants rise above fear.
Triumph over pain.
Push themselves and inspire others.

To be a Giant.
To do Giant things.
To take Giant steps.
To move the world forward.'

and

'RHYMES
They gather together thousands and thousands and thousands still more.
For sixteen straight days the stadiums roar.

They line all the fields.
They polish the courts.
A rainbow of colors together for sport.

They sprint and they jostle.
They jump and they shout.
They sometimes get hostile.
But they work it all out.

They smile.They laugh.
They learn life's lessons.
They respect one another regardless of weapons.

The big and the small together seem awkward.
But amazingly enough they push the world forward.

And when it's all over, it's as good as it gets.
A lifetime of memories with zero regrets.

Then they pack up the balls and roll up the mats.
Put on their best suits and finest of hats.

They all wave goodbye.
They hug and they kiss.

And you think that maybe.....
just maybe....

it could all be like this.'

They still haven't finished building Periclean Athens.

What chance have they of finishing the building for the Olympics?

It will add another area of interest. Will the swimmers have water to swim in? If not, do they have a swimsuit parade while they wait?

I hope this Olympics will be less political than most but apparently even in Classical times politics was a big issue at every Olympic Ganes and the Olympic Truce was the time for wheeling and dealing between nation states.

LOL. :D I could live with that though.

I'm still pondering to accept an invitation from a friend living in the outskirts of Athens to spend a week there during the madness. I'm not too crazy about the events themselves - I can see what's happening better on TV, and I would have to sell a kidney, or my ass, to afford tickets anyway.

But it would be fun to experience the insanity live. :)

I guess the atmosphere might be very cool (at least if you're viewing a popular event) but you're right. The over-all action is best followed on tv.

Oh and a tip, if you really have to decide, take the kidney, because I bet your ass is too fine to sell. :p

'is it worth the...' Well, you sure know how to give a girl a compliment. :D

OPPONENT

You are my adversary, but you are not my enemy.
For your resistance gives me strength.
Your will gives me courage.
Your spirit ennobles me.
And though I aim to defeat you, should I succeed, I will not
humiliate you.
Instead, I will honor you.
For without you, I am a lesser man.

I hope that The Olympics will be entertaining and uplifting; that a few 'no-hopers' will surprise themselves and their opponents by producing their best performance ever; and that the event will not be marred by any political actions.

The last is unfortunately unlikely.

The UK Team Managers have already been trotting out their excuses before the Olympics start. We won't win many medals. Australia, with less than half our population will win at least twice as many as we do. Why? Because competitive sport has been de-emphasised in our schools for years. It has been seen as divisive and elitist, giving those who are not athletic an inferiority complex.

There has been insufficient investment in sports facilities; virtually no support for competitors in any Olympic sport; those few who have any chance of a medal have been training in other countries such as the US.

For swimmers, there are only 18 Olympic sized swimming pools in the UK. Hiring one for training is prohibitively expensive. In Australia there is an Olympic sized pool for every town with more than 3000 inhabitants. Australia will win more swimming medals than the UK. In my town there is one public swimming pool and less than 20 private ones most of which are under 5 metres long. In Australian towns it would be difficult to count how many private swimming pools there are.

Sure you can. Make the swimmers swim with sharks. Make the runners get chased by grizzly bears. Make the pole vaulters and long jumpers jump over phiranas. Give the shot-putters and hammer throwers explosives. Let's see how much courage these "amateur" athletes have then.

Ehm....what ???

But you still can't measure it.

But what the fuck's going on. The Olympics are not far away and no one contributes to this thread ???

We don't know yet who will represent us.

The final qualifying event is on Monday.

It is difficult to get excited about the Olympics when our athletes have problems meeting the minimum standard.

We hope someone will produce something good but...

Winter Olympics - we celebrated Women's Curling!!!

Wait until it starts, then tickets will drop dramatically in price as the Greeks realise that people are staying away in droves.

I know a number of people in the UK who are not going because last year the Greeks arrested tourists for taking photographs of aircraft while standing on a public road.

Hmm. You seem to be somewhat misinformed. There are many cheap tickets (and had been there all along). 8 Euros for the opening ceremony? That's hardly outrageous, wouldn't you agree?

And they have to keep those pesky terrorists away, no? Australia wants everyone in jail and even then they don't know if they can feel safe. Athens is a scary place you know. :)

A guy was seen walking across the Ben Franklin bridge and taking pictures of Phily and the Delaware river about a year ago. Unidentified "law enforcement agents" swooped down and wisked him away. It took his family and laywer days to even get an acknowledgement from the feds.
