Crimea -- Russia vs. Ukraine

--Similar to the Germany-Czech dispute, after Russia grabbed Crimea through force and after Russia started stirring shit in Donbas, Ukraine started impingeing on minority rights. Especially after 2014, Ukrainians banned Hungarians, Romanians, Bulgarians, Moldovans and Russians from using their native language in schools or cultural institutions.

In a sense understandable, when your country's survival is at stake you institute drastic measures.

Why would anyone with net assets of several billion dollars borrow money when he can pay for stuff with checks that clear the bank?

That only happens if stock values rise. No one can predict which stocks will rise and which stocks will decline.

During the 1920's when the stocks had been rising, a lot of people borrowed money and bought stocks. When the stocks rose in value, they sold them, paid off their debts, and banked the rest. People were buying stocks that had not paid dividends for years on the assumption that the stock value would rise. Obviously, that only works as long as the stock market keeps growing.

When the stock market began to fall in 1929 stock owners resembled those cartoon characters who walk off of a cliff, and who do not begin to fall until they look down and realize that there is nothing beneath them but air.
