At the end of the Mexican-American War

At the end of the Mexican-American War, the U.S. was this close to annexing all of Mexico.

For various reasons, none of them having anything to do with Mexican nationalism, it didn't happen.

Should that count as a missed opportunity, or a dodged bullet?

If it had been done, all the Mexicans would be U.S. citizens, and the only possible "border crisis" would be with Guatemala.
