Asylum applications across the European Union fell by 23% year on year in the first six months of 2025, the EU asylum agency has reported.
The drop in claims for international protection was largely the result of the fall of Syria’s Assad regime in December 2024, the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) reported in presenting its Mid-Year Review.
By the end of June, the so-called EU+, made up of the 27 member states and the four non-EU members of the Schengen Area—Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland—had received a total of 399,000 claims, the EUAA said.
The number of Syrians applying for protection fell by over two-thirds (66%) to around half the number of Venezuelan nationals, which were up by 31%, making them the largest nationality group.
Second on the list were Afghans, with Syrians third, followed by Bangladeshis and Turks.
