For others who've not been Scarborough has two beaches, a minature railway a park with a lake, seafront amusements, a kiddies theme park, a castle, donkies, great shopping, a market and vault, cazy golf, indoor kids play centre, museums (though some are closed for refur right now) and the best damn air I've ever breathed oh and the most bestest thing -Jaconelli's Ice cream . *drool slobber drool*

I've just come back from a week there. I've been to scarborough once or more a year for the past 22 or so years. It's good ;)

You so should, it only gets better :p

It depends on the age of the children, where you are coming from, and how you are travelling.

In SE England I would recommend -

Bournemouth - good beaches, entertainment and the New Forest nearby.
Camber Sands - sandy beach, close to Rye and Hastings.
Isle of Thanet - Minnis Bay, Botany Bay preferred by the locals, or Viking Bay in Broadstairs for sand and facilities. Walpole Bay Hotel, Cliftonville, Margate is a 1920s themed hotel above a beach with a very quiet tidal paddling/swimming pool with rock pools to explore.

Here's a Yanks misconceptions showing. Are any of the beaches in the UK warm enough in the summer for protracted swimming? They all look so cold in photos.

Ya can't swim on the beach! Ya have to swim in the sea and it's f***ing cold! :D (As far as I'm concerned). Doesn't bother my better half, she'll swim almost anywhere, UK, Norway... I prefer the warmer waters of Portugal, preferably the shallow end of a pool.

For places to go to in UK - Dorset, an infinitely interesting coastline almost devoid of commercialism, which regrettably means there are few places to stay unless you like caravans or camping.

That explains all the sand in my mouth...

Kind of what I figured.

I still have trouble believing the ocean off San Francisco, is the same one off Puerto Vallarta, Hawaii or Tahiti. San Fran got gypped.

The sea at scarborough was warm when we went, my daughter happily sat with it up to her chest but it was very hot by Brit standards :)

Some of the locals swim in front of my house on Christmas Day. Of course, some of the locals are certifiably insane. They usually stay in the water for about five minutes.

This time of year, when the tide comes in over the sun-warmed sand, the water temperature is warm enough to swim in continuously for an hour or so.

I've done the Dorset holiday, as well as spent a month on the Isle of Wight, we've done Cayton Bay/ Scarborough. We've done Ramsgate/ White cliffs.

I'm thinking West Coast. I'll have to research more.

Dammit EL, you've got me drooling, talking about Jaconelli's ;)

I'm partial to Torquay in South Devon. Ok, so that's my hometown, but seriously, it's nice there...except for the crime and stuff, but you know.

I'd recommend South Wales from Barry Island to the Gower Peninsula - as long as you respect the tides which can be fierce.

We're off to Wales at the end of August - St. David's area and more northwards... can;t remember name of the place right now... I'll ask the Fiance when I see him next :)
