Why does your school have to start with 'The?'

A few reasons but the biggest is that when they changed names back in the 1800's the new name was The Ohio State University in the bill that went through the state legislature.

There is a more recent explanation from the 70's or 80's that says they didn't want to be confused to Oregon State and Oklahoma State.

Most stick with the first reason.
