I went to PetCo today to get my kids a couple of betas for their room. Since I was there, I got a couple of female guppies and some pretty yellow fish to add to the big tank.

I got home, and as i was adding the new fish to the big tank, I notice that there is a mass of baby fish hiding under the bubbler at the back of the tank.

I ended up setting up my old ten gallon tank and catching as many babies as I could and moving them over there. I've got 14, I think. I don't know how many were lunch before I rescued the ones I did, and I have no clue how many babies Mollies normally have... but I have 3 more mollies that look REALLY fat.

So, I have a 40 gallon tank in my diningroom that houses around 15 fish and a snail. I have a huge cage in my living room that houses a 28" iguana with an attitude problem, and sitting on top of that, I have a 10 gallon tank with a bunch of itsy bitsy baby fishies in it. And, 2 betas in the kids' room.

I'm thinkin I should become a shelter for wayward animals. Do you get state funding for that?

Get in touch with Laurel for details :D

LOL guppies?????

We had 2 guppies once. Well we started with 2 guppies and wound up with 50 in the end!

Those things are worse than rabbits hun.

If so, I am in.

My marigold guppies are prego. I have a kitty up in a room who i brought home from the greenhouse, who is prego and I feel prego.

Mollies have lots and lots of babies. If you just leave them in the big tank, most of them will probably not survive, the other fish will eat them.

If you have mollies, odds are, you will pretty much always have babies in the tank. They breed like crazy.

Actually, I only bought female guppies. The mollies are the ones reproducing. Of course, I thought I only had female mollies. Maybe they were preggers when I got them?

One of my horses is going to be having a baby any day... I've got 11 baby chickens running around the chicken coop right now... I've never been so glad the dogs and cats are fixed!!! Think I'm gonna take extra BCP's, just in case this baby fever is catching! ;)

The fish store may take the mollies off your hands once they get big enough. Since you put them in a separate tank, keep them there until the fish store is willing to take them. Either offer to sell them or give them to them. They will just resale. My dad use to breed fish for local aquarium shops. Mollies were constantly breading. Actually any live bearing tropical fish is prolific is you have pairs.

Good luck with the cridders. :)

Licky, LOL. Wouldn't that be a trip? I can't have kids in my condition. I couldn't even bare them, let alone raise them.

I am just puking a lot and really sick in my stomach. Feels like prego sickness.

*whew*

I never know whether to say 'congratulations!!!' or OMG, what are you going to DO?' So I just pretend nothing was said. (Total denial)

Hey, will my black mollies and my white mollies have gray babies? Are bi-racial fish accepted???

Don't say can't. You just never know what can happen. I hope you feel better soon.. puking is yucky. :(

We had black Mollies & silver Mollies when I was a kid. The black Mollie had babies. It was cool!

I do love Mollies. :D

PCG, LOL.

BI-racial fish are like Marxist and I getting it on and having politically fucked up starfish babies. Yes, they are accepted...

at least here they are.

Oh, and if I were to get prego, I'd loose it in about a month or two, like last spring, or it'd kill me so it would be one of those... What the fuck are you going to do? things, so you know in the future what to say. :D

Licky, I shouldn't say can't, but it failed last time I tried, and the doctor told me it would be stupid to try in my condition. However, I don't know what is wrong with me, so until I do, we shall see.

There are a lot of kids out there who need a mom. I love kids that are already grown past the baby stage anyway.

I love Mollies too. They are cute and usually they get along with the other pets. Usually.... :)

Ok, so basically what everyone is telling me, is that by purchasing the cheap fish on the assumption that I could afford a lot more of them, andif they died, they were easily replaced, really set me up to be a fishie nanny?

I suppose platies breed like crazy too?

God, I hope those guppies I bought are all three female.

Thanks Fishie, for preparing me. ;)

I've seen a black and white mix mollies in pet stores. They're cute looking. I don't have live breeders in my tank right now, tetras, barbs, chiclids, neons. But I do like mollies and sword tails. Each one is easy to breed too.

ARe you saying you DO have chiclids in with those others, or not?

I have one of the speckly black and white ones. Guess it didn't occur to me that that is what happens when you throw a black one and a white one into the gene pool.

Any live bearing fish will breed eventually and often if there are matched pairs. That includes guppies, mollies, platies, swordtails, and a few others I can't remember their names. No special conditions or environment is needed like egg laying fishes. Live bearing apparently means they are horny and like to breed. My dad raised and sold all types of live bearing fish and egg laying fish to tropical fish stores.

Yep, mollies and platies are breeders. You won't need to buy any fish for a while unless you want different breeds. You may want to put your prego ? other mollies in the 10 gallon tank till they have their babies. But it you do, put some type of separation between them and the young ones or they could become lunch.

I'm saying I don't have any live bearings fish in with the chicklids and this assortment of fish types. The barbs and chiclids are moderately aggressive, mostly just when I feed them. They really don't bother each other much. Some types of chiclids are very very aggresive and shouldn't be put in with other types of fish. The ones I have have better temperments with other fishes.

I wouldn't put any type of live breeding fish in with my current mix of fish though. Live breeding fishes are docile generally and get along with other live breeders and some types of egg layers.

I've some kind of fish tank set up since I got out of high school. They are just cool to have around and is a ready source of water for my cats.

When I called mom and told her that my fish were reproducing, she laughed her ass off. I think she had beer comin out of her nose, she was laughing so hard.

Apparently, when I was much much younger, we had a great big aquarium... I remember the aquarium. What I didn't remember was that we had sword tails, mollies, tinfoil barbs, and oscars. Mom said when we got the barbs and oscars, they were too small to hurt the other fish, but when those fish started breeding like crazy, she just stopped feeding the oscars, and they got huge.

I think what I'm gonna do is keep the ones I caught seperated. If they make it in the new tank, I'll figure out something to do with 'em. If not, I'm going to assume they would have been better off in the big tank... survival of the fittest and all that.

Will more plants in the big tank help 'em survive if I leave 'em in there? I did notice at least 6 more babies in there tonight that I didn't see earlier.

Of course you do! You're a kitten!

Did you give the thought that......

the water is spiked! I mean with all the animals that are prego, does logic dictate here?:D
