Hi guys,

I want to use both the "ara" and "arp" functions in MS excel, but I need to know what exactly they do before I proceed. (I don't want for my function to work, and I can't explain it to my boss/es). Has anyone here used either format? Any help you can give would be most appreciated.

Assuming this isn't April 1st, they look like user-defined functions, perhaps from some VBA in the worksheet, and aren't part of Excel. So you'd have to ask the developer who wrote them to find out what they do, how they're used, and get some ideas about "I don't want for my function to work" before doing much else.

Of course, not getting things to work is pretty easy.

Odd how people on Google have asked the same question.

You misunderstand, I want my function to work (in fact, it actually does), but I don't because its not a standard function, I don't want the 'higher ups' asking me details about a function that I'm not well versed in.

I too was shocked that Google wasn't more helpful, but people at Lit always have some good input (paging WierdHarold); so I'm hoping that somone has come across these functions before. Thanks for responding.

1. I suspect you speak English as a second language. Perhaps Excel is installed in non-English version, using the local language where you work.

The function names "ARP" and "ARA" could be translated by the installer from English to the local language.

2. There are a couple of (non-helpful) search references http://www.excelbanter.com/showthread.php?t=146607 from 2007 and another thread http://excel.itags.org/q_microsoft-excel_481832.html a year later.

3. To see if it is a user function, look in Tools/Macros/Visual Basic Editor and see if it's defined.

What the other poster said, maybe it's a language-specific function that I, being where I live, have no idea what it is.

However, the wording of your question:

You misunderstand, I want my function to work (in fact, it actually does), but I don't because its not a standard function, I don't want the 'higher ups' asking me details about a function that I'm not well versed in.

...is easy to misunderstand.

a) You want your function to work, and it does.
b) But you don't, because it's not a standard function.
c) You don't want any higher-ups asking questions.

This leads me to conclude that:

1) You are writing malicious code.
2) You are trying to hide the malicious code from your employer.

Maybe you missed a word or two, and what you're really saying is:

1) This code works.
2) I don't know why because the function isn't standard.
3) I don't like it when I'm asked what it does and I can only respond: "I don't know"

Unfortunately, without the function being in the Excel version I have, I can't look it up and see what it does. If it's a user-defined function (some VBA in your worksheet) then examining the code is the only way to see what it does. And I suspect that emailing it to someone, to help you, would be against company policy.

No way to help you there. Sorry. And my VBA skills are....pretty basic.

I am NOT, I repeat, not writing malicious code. I got the function from another spreadsheet that the company itself uses and used it for a calculation that I'm performing for work. Like you stated below, "I don't like it when I'm asked what it does and I can only respond: "I don't know". Emailing it would be against company policy, but I appreciate your efforts.

Thanks too for the links OnceFuturePoly. :rose:
