Arousal vs emotion

@pink_silk_glove's post about female orgasm is about as hyper-focused as is possible, but no one that I've seen has identified it as arousing (impressive, yes, but not arousing). I think it's the absence of setting that keeps it from being erotica. (I posted a link to it somewhere up thread.) Here's the link again.

I appreciate the praise and the props, but you've tagged me 4 or 5 times in this thread already for the exact same thing. Could you please stop? Thank you. : )

It's about as arousing as the instructions for assembling a Billy bookcase. Then again, I don't think it's intended to be arousing. It's a description, a how-to guide.

When I wrote, "To blank out the setting, you have to have your characters hyper-focused on what they're doing and feeling", meant a very, very close 1P or 3P POV. Long lingering descriptions of the sensations, emotions and reactions. If all you're giving the reader is the experience of sex, make them actually experience it up close. Make it come alive.

Absolutely. Not intended to arouse. But impressive all the same. And a good example for our discussion.

Yup.

Thanks for this example. Every now and then I find occasion to try to explain what I call "simple erotica," and I've suggested that stories/articles/vignettes describing the experience of surfing, or.... This is great. I'm beginning to think of the different parts of the main course as I type.
Glad it resonated for you!
