they were stopped at gunpoint, the 56-year old woman ordered to her knees outside the vehicle then ordered forward where she was arrested, the 67-year old dialysis patient with a stint in his hand was ordered out the car, onto the ground, cuffed and arrested despite the woman telling them of his stint and how it could be harmful if they cuffed him. Cops tossed the car but found nothing and when asked why they'd been arrested the cops said they were looking for the teenage suspects.
Texas. *sighs*
"RPD incorrectly identified Ms. Armstead's vehicle as the one used by the group of teens to flee the scene of an alleged assault, even though Plaintiffs are senior citizens and do not remotely match the description of the teen suspects," the lawsuit said.
"I was praying to God that the guns didn't go off on us because when you point guns at somebody like that, you never know," Lewis told Insider.

The officers cuffed Lewis despite his medical objections and placed him in a separate police car while they searched Armstead's vehicle and confiscated her cell phone without explanation, said the lawsuit, which accuses RPD of illegal search and seizure, unlawful detention, and false arrest.
"That was real scary. I tell you, it really was. I feared for my life. I really did, and Regina too," Lewis said. "We both feared for our lives. Because, like I said, a gun could have went off."

"As a result of the handcuffing during his arrest, Mr. Lewis's medical device in his wrist malfunctioned. This resulted in three separate medical procedures to replace his fistula. These procedures caused prolonged pain and suffering to Mr. Lewis," the lawsuit said.

Years ago, I was stopped by armed police looking for an escaped dangerous prisoner.

The man they were looking for was five feet four inches tall.

When my friend and I got out of the car, the police were relieved. We were both well over six feet tall. But then they began to get worried in case we objected to being stopped. I was 300lb of muscle. My friend was slightly smaller but both of us were larger than either of the policemen.

When asked for my identity I produced my Ministry of Defence photo card. They relaxed after that.

I honestly don't need to read beyond the title.
It 1.) Doesn't shock me at all & 2.) Has been occurring way longer and in more cruel & fatal ways for decades upon decades.
But, hey, I guess we should be thankful for smartphones and social media for providing "proof." Otherwise, we'd only have our true experiences to go by 🤨.

If this weren't just a case of Texas being Texas, i could have a generic sympathy for the cops in the original stop and ordering out of the car by armed officers: whether through a lack of good information or a genuine mistake, apparently these cops thought the car might be the same one. Given the rules now about guns and how so many carry them openly, plus they were supposed to be looking for armed individuals, i understand the cops being wary, even scared for their own safety. After all, this couple might even have a hidden suspect in their vehicle. I don't know why any cop wants more civilians walking around armed as it can only make their own lives more dangerous and more difficult for them to immediately assess threats/who's the bad guys in any situation

Having said that, it can't have taken but moments to establish these two people weren't the suspects, weren't armed, and were of little to no risk to armed officers. They should have checked out the man's medical needs; why were they cuffed? why were they arrested? Surely they could have been questioned without any of that and without causing such fear beyond the initial armed stop which must be terrifying enough on its own when they've done nothing wrong and merely going about their day.

sadly so true

UK police are generally polite but firm when they stop someone unless they resist arrest or try to run for it.

But black men, particularly black men in their late teens and twenties, are far more likely to be stopped even if the suspect being sought is white.

One of my daughter's friends is a black man who is a barrister, specialising in commercial, not criminal law. He drives an expensive Mercedes Benz cabriolet.

He used to be stopped several times a week and each time he produced his business card with the name of his prominent legal chambers.

Now, inside the City of London, all the police know him and his car and he just gets a friendly wave.

Most of the police in the inner London boroughs know him too, but when he goes further out he expects to be stopped - again and again.

I saw a blip on this earlier. Seems Rosenberg may be a bit too Texas for Texas.

Busted noses, broken devices: Texas police department routinely rough with the medically vulnerable, lawsuit alleges

A federal lawsuit says that the Rosenberg Police Department has been routinely aggressive with compliant civilians who are medically vulnerable.

Had an ex who went to a top 10 university. He and his friend would exchange stories of the different times they were stopped on campus and asked to produce a student ID.

Privileged people will never truly understand the depths of their safe bubble.

cop fired after tasing wheelchair guy 4 times.. when he was on the ground

yeah, outstanding warrants on the man, but an arrest could have been made without resorting to this level of violence. that's why he go booted. one by one by one. of course it takes too long; of course it's never enough, but it is important.

Oh, haven't you heard? Warrants, resisting, human fear, justifiable mistrust, an imperfect past that has no bearing on the present: these are always good enough reasons for police brutality and murder.
I'm sure the wheelchair bound suspect made the "officer" fear for his life. So, it's fine.

Edit: whoops. I almost forgot being unarmed or pregnant or both are also perfectly acceptable reasons for murder by "cop"

well, no, not fine... he was fired.

Ha. People like that never get true justice. So, again, it's fine. I'm sure Officer I'm-One-Of-The-Good-Ones will have no problems finding a similar job in which he can freely wield unchecked levels of power.
It's what makes America so great.

He will probably just go to work for the town down the street

And when the question comes up "have you ever been disciplined for.....???" He'll lie and say no.

And no one has the ability to check

No one wants to check. If he passes the white test, then he's as good as hired...during the interview.
