Are you scared?

Failure - continued

Failure of our leaders (in the USA) to get a grip on reality.

Failure of the voting public to get a grip on reality.

Failure of my hard drive.

Failure of the backup DVD's.

Failure of Jessica Alba to do nude scenes in her movies.

My nightmares, though infrequent, are usually worry dreams about my children.

Other fears include Alzheimers or other debilitating sicknesses

I am afraid of burning to death in a fire during a car accident, mainly. Oh, and ... herpes. lol. I can't be on the same elevator as a person with a cold sore - it freaks me because I keep thinking the virus will miraculously jump onto me.

It will.

LOL - I know it won't and I used to get panic attacks riding in an elevator with people with cold sores. Nowadays, I simply move as far away as humanly possible even if I had a really great doctor that explained everything about the virus to me. Fears are awful and I do try to get over mine. However, I know that even if I can sleep with lights off and bedroom door open, some people can't. We need to understand each other a bit more. Example? McKenna's fear of grasshoppers. Grasshoppers are the most harmless of creatures ... in my eyes, but not to her.

The only time I've really come up against my fear lately is at the ocean. When I was younger I adored the ocean and spent all day long body surfing. Lately though, I just get this karmic feedback loop going on in my head like "Shark either ate you or will eat you" and I can't shake it.

I do blame Jaws and Shark Week for overdoing my fears, but even when we go to the beach now...as protective of a mother as I am, I let my kids go into the water, but I feel so very torn. Would I go beat the crap out of a shark? Or would I freeze completely.

Fortunately my husband's always there, and he's actually caught and released a six-foot hammerhead by hand, and he's not afraid of anything. I've been fearless for a good long while, but him being so beyond fearless, I'm dependent on him. When my son went out too far into the water...who went to get him, but my husband.

I'd like to think that if he weren't with me, I'd be braver. But then again, if he weren't with me, maybe I just wouldn't take my kids to the beach...

I get irrational weird ones that I just can't do much about. See "13 Ghosts?" Well, obviously the bathroom is haunted. Duh.

I usually like to take bubble baths in the dark. Was impossible for about a year there. Jackal was between me and the towel, I was sure of it.

Play "Crimson Butterfly: Fatal Frame"? I don't know why, but the OTHER bathroom was haunted with medieval Japanese ghosts.

Lights on.

YOU CAN GO INTO THE WATER! Sharks usually don't bother anyone. If they come at you? Simply look them in the eye and then punch them in the nose and then, well, swim as fast as you can to the nearest surf board or nearest person wearing flippers. lol

Yes, I know this. And the bathroom's safe with the lights off.

And yet.

I guess the point is that there are parts of my brain that just don't go through reason circuits.

I know, shock, huh?

:D happens to us all. So, what is that little part of the brain that does not get that "REASONING" part? I suppose if we knew, we'd not be afraid of fire and herpes and grasshoppers and sharks and god forbid (I saw it on Oprah) lettuce.

My bet is the amygdala. Emotional associations that don't go through the reason circuits, triggered by the senses only, and sometimes those triggers we don't know. Is it because it's dark? Is it water? (Yes, after seeing Jaws I was afraid to swim in a lake)

The mind is a very strange place. At least mine is. But I have escaped fear of lettuce.

Dying alone.

Losing my loved ones.

Losing my mind.

It's amazing that to see how many people I respect and admire have the same or similar fears as mine. It's not something they need to worry about because they are truly amazing people, but it never really helps to hear that. Does kinda put my own fear in perspective though. Doesn't make it go away, but at least I have perspective. :p

totally know what u mean babe  :rose:

I have another fear, which isn't as easy to bring out into the open. It's to do with losing control. It started off as performance anxiety, and then crossed over to other areas of life. Basically, whenever I thought I was on display or people were watching me. And it turned into a cycle that just fed off itself.

I'd worry so much about it happening that it would actually trigger full-on panic attacks, which gave me even more cause to worry about the next social event, which made it even more likely that I'd get a panic attack.

At its worst, I was the chick sitting in the corner of the pub, ghostly white and barely able to breathe, with sweat running down my face while I did everything to convince myself and everyone around me that I was ok.

It hasn't happened in a long time. I don't know what changed. Suddenly I just stopped caring as much. I got better at finding 'escapes', and after a while I didn't need them as much anymore.

My current job revolves around social stuff, where I really am on display. It wasn't an accident that I applied for it - more of a kill or cure type thing.

The fear's latent, but it's still there - more so if I'm tired or feeling under the weather. These days, though, it's restricted to women I fancy... especially when they come across as being really glamorous and really perfect. Because I know it's only a matter of time before I say something stupid, or disgrace myself in some way.

And that's the biggest skeleton in my closet.
