I got to wondering how many authors are "in the closet" as far as their erotic writing goes.

Do your friends know?

Does your family know?

Does your significant other know?

Do you want to keep it a secret? If so, has anyone ever found out, and how? And if you were "exposed", how did you handle it?

Do you even care who knows?

To answer my own questions....

I try to keep it a closely guarded secret. There are some friends who know I write, but who don't want to read it (although I think they're secretly curious but would never admit it). I have a few girlfriends who beg me to bring copies of my latest pennings to our girls' nights, and who are quite vocal about which stories need next chapters and which characters they love to hate. And I have a few male friends I send stories to for a male perspective prior to posting.

But my family doesn't know. My husband knows I write, but there are only a few stories I've been willing to share with him.

I just wondered how many of you are "out of the closet" vs. "in the closet" when it comes to writing erotica and posting it for the world to wank to.

My Mum only found out a couple of weeks back that I was writing, and even then I edited out the sex scene.

One sister knows all about my stories, the rest I could care less if they knew.

As for my friends? They know what a perverted bitch I am LOL

It did become known by someone recently because of someone else's big mouth but it was handled without any problems.

And if you were "exposed", how did you handle it? If they like my work, I'll accept their praise as graciously as possible. Which in my case ain't very. If they think it's vile and disgusting and hastens my soul on the path to Hell, that's their problem.

Does your family know? absolutely not!! My parents would go apoplectic......I don't care to tell my brothers or sister. As for my sons. Not yet.

Does your significant other know? Not a chance. He thinks it's perverted. Other significant other (long story) knows and loves it.

I don't have a lot of choice, since I went full-time as a writer of BDSM novels.

The family, many friends, the SO, even the d****d tax man, all know. My new (French) son-in-law has offered to be my official translator.

It's hard to hide how you make your living when you sit nine to five in front of a screen at home. That makes it difficult to convince people that you are a sheep farmer, or a coal miner.

Does your family know? Most of them know - those I'm closest to, anyway - my Mum, my younger brother and my Nan, who thinks it's great.

Does your significant other know? Yep. He's the one who got me writing in the first place. He's also the one who introduced me to Lit.

Do you want to keep it a secret? Nope, no secrets as far as I'm concerned. I don't see it as anything to be ashamed of. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Do you even care who knows? Not really, but I guess I don't want my daughters to know, or even begin to comprehend, until they are a LOT older. They know I write, but they just know about the novels and think they are "thrillers".

<takes tongue out of cheek> Fraid I'm pure boogeyman here, hiding all maliciously in the closet. My friends think all I write is non-erotic fiction, ditto for family, and double ditto for dog (it's such an innocent three-headed puppy). Even my servants in Hell think I only write doctored Bibles.

Would it be a big deal if people found out? Proly. Especially among my highly Christian friends. I think my parents wouldn't give a shit. They're always after me to act more perverted. They scare me a little.

Yes, many of my friends know about Lit and one has even co-authored a story with me (~waves to Biplaymate420~) that is still pending. Almost all of them know about my baseball column though. ( I write a San Diego Padres weblog also)

My family knows for the most part. Both parents know.

My significant other has known from the beginning.

I don't want to share it with everyone. The closest I have come to being exposed was my co-author sharing our story with a friend and me not knowing it for a few days. It just happened to be a very attractive young lady who I am old enough to have fathered. I found it to be rather embarressing but not objectionable. Now it is fun that she knows and she has read more of my work.

Yes, there are people in my life I would rather stay out of this part of it.

No- they are fairly conservative, and I don't know what they would think of it so I just keep it quiet.
I did send one of my stories to the person who was the "star" though.

No, same as above - pretty conservative.

Does your significant other know?
Well, no - although he should. There is no reason why I can't share my stories with him - but for some reason I don't. I showed him this site once, but he wasn't too interested. He would probably enjoy my stories if I showed them to him, but I sort of like staying "in the closet" so to speak too.

Yes, I would prefer to keep it a secret. It's not that I am ashamed, because I am not at all... I just have a thing about revealing such private information about myself.... I think I am more comfortable talking about it if I know the other person is open about it, but if I think they are not then I would rather just not go there. I hope I am never "found out" by someone I don't want to find out.
