Fanatic: marked by excessive enthusiasm and often intense uncritical devotion.

Is there anything that you are so intensely devoted to that you are willing to harm other people? To infringe on their rights? That no one can speak any rational sense to you about?

Is there something about which you would say "if only we can save one child", "if only one person's life is saved", "if only one person never has to raped/killed/shot/sexually abused again", "if only one child never has to go hungry again", ad nauseum, "then it is worth any price, including trampling everybody's civil rights"? About which you say/feel "I don't care what the cost is in rights, money or anything else - it is worth it"?

I know there are at least two people here who are fanatics in this sense. I suspect there are more. Here is your chance to come out of the closet.

I'm a live and let live type of person...

Except towards those who aren't live and let live... *grrr*

I wouldn't trample anyone's anything for my own thoughts and beliefs.

But if I believe strongly about something I will argue it to death no problem. Proove me wrong and I'll admit it, but when it comes to beliefs, it's very hard to proove anything.

I don't think I fall into the fanatic category, but then who would know if they did? I guess that's for others to say.

What do you think?

I'm close but not quite....I believe very strongly that each person should find their own way in life that is right for them, however, they do not have the right to harm others or the earth our children and grandchildren deserve the chance to enjoy.

I have formed, in conjunction with my brothers in freedom, the Ellipses Liberation Front. ELF is comprised of patriots who will fight for the freedom of our beloved ellipses no matter the cost. Freedom from abuse, overuse, misuse, and any other bad use we can think of. The little ellipses, they say so much about how we say so little. To this end, we have purchased the required weapons to accomplish this.

I'm not fanatical about anything.

I don't know - I would have to go back and look at past posts. I do know you and I have disagreed strongly about a few things, so I would have to go back and see what you had to say exactly.

I do know that there are more fanatics than have voted here (I suspect SillyMan, being silly, voted himself a fanatic). Two people here recently made fanatic statements, and at least one of those pretty much proved herself a fanatic:

Naughty n Nice:

"Hell, I don't want to see all porn abolished either. But, I would prefer to see that then to see another picture of a child being raped."

and her best quote:

"The difference between you and me is that I would do ANYTHING to keep the children safe."

SINthysist who quotes an article:

"Well, I think it's time for the thought police - if that's what it takes - to weed out those who would put their own offspring at risk."

"I say too bad - if that's what it takes to clean up the Internet."

Also, I have heard other people talk about lynching people, nuking middle east countries, banning religion, banningthis that or the other thing.

I think that if people were a honest with themselves they would realize they are indeed fanatic about at least one issue.

But...

Hmm...

I don't know...

And those would be?

STG, sounds to me like you were posting AT a few people hoping they'd fess up or something. No one ever believes themselves to be fanatical. What is obvious to others is not seen by them.

That's what MAKES people fanatics.

No, I was trying to accomplish two things:

1) To make a point without bringing a thread to the front page that some people would rather see fade away. I personally don't care whether it comes back or not, but bot hthe originator and several other people have stated that they want it to fade away.

2) I was genuinely interested in how many people could recognize that they are fanatics.

No one ever believes themselves to be fanatical. What is obvious to others is not seen by them.

I agree to a point - I think some people do recognize themselves to be a fanatic, at least the way I defined one. This poll would have worked better as a survey where people answered questions and then were graded on a scale. Polls like this instead ask people to grade themselves, and nobody wants to admit to being unreasonable or a fanatic, or both.

I voted that I a "strong advocate". If I were not such a strong believer in truth, freedom and liberty, I could easily be a fanatic. There are people who believe so strongly in "freedom" that they are willing to align themselves with the devil in order to force "freedom" on others.

How often has the US supported totalitarian governments because they were our allies against communism?

How many people think that Teddy Roosevelt was a great president when he was actually an imperialistic war monger? How many people thought the same of JFK when he brought us to the brink of nuclear war? All in the name of "democracy" and the "American Way".

Hi! It's me.....

Fucking Aye! We were attacked, those who are on the side of the attackers are the enemy...period. Nukes? Yep! You better believe that the balance of terror is why we haven't gone to nuke wars in the past, and if the enemy uses them against us, I'm for killing every genetic trail of them. If my government slides towards tyranny, I'll be there to fight and die for what I believe in. It's all about survival.

*Oh yeah, and if somebody knocks over my Harley, death to them! :D

You mean besides yourself don't you?

For those that don't get what I am referring to - LC backed into his Panhead the other day with his truck.

LC, I would say you should vote for fanatic just based on your general personality! :D If not personality, then based on the fact that you feel you should be able to run straight pipes on your bike and fuck everybody else!

I've said it before, I'll say it again...

"Gimme an issue, I'll give you a tissue, and you can wipe my ass with it."

What I find especially loathsome are fanatics under the age of 40.

Punk ass kids haven't even begun to earn their fanaticism yet--hell, their mother's milk still ain't dry around their mouths--and they presume to have an idea they think anybody'd give two shits about.

How'd you know?

If there were no fanatics, there would be nobody to point to and say, "They're fucking fanatics!"

*If it's too loud, you're too old!
*Loud pipes save lives, and annoy the rest! :D

Old farts have just begun to earn their Depends disposable briefs--hell, their drool never stops running out of their mouths--and they presume to have an idea they think anybody'd give two shits about.

Just remember, it goes both ways. :p
