'Silverbacks' called racially insensitive

Some leaders of Buffalo's black community say they consider the new name for the city's minor-league basketball team, the Silverbacks, offensive and racially insensitive. They say a silverback - an adult male gorilla - is an inappropriate nickname for a team with a large number of black players because bigots have referred to blacks as "gorillas," "apes" and "monkeys."

Those terms "have a history of being used to dehumanize African-Americans," said Betty Jean Grant, a Buffalo School Board member and former Common Council member. "That is a very derogatory term."

But members of the Silverbacks organization said they don't consider the new name offensive and won't change it.

"No. We're excited with the nickname. We're excited for our season. This is pro basketball back in Buffalo," said Rich Jacob, the team's general manager and head coach.

The team, which plays in the American Basketball Association, has carried the name Silverbacks since May.

The team played as the Rapids last year under former owner Gary Nice, who sold the franchise to co-owners Dan Robbie and Todd Wier last December.

The new owners had to change the team's nickname because Nice retained the rights to the Rapids name. Wier asked the team for input, and Modie Cox - who serves as a player and assistant coach - came up with the winning idea.

A silverback is an older male gorilla who is a respected leader of his group, said Cox, a devoted fan of Discovery Channel's Animal Planet network.

"We're going to go out there; we're going to demand that respect," he said of the team.

Cox, a former University at Buffalo basketball star, said he did not consider the racial implications of the name and apologizes if anyone is offended by it.

"I'm a young black man. And I'm proud of my race, my heritage," he said.

A handful of other minor-league sports teams use the Silverbacks nickname, including a semi-professional football team in London, Ont., and a pro soccer team in Atlanta.

Atlanta's team takes its nickname from a beloved gorilla, Willie B., who lived at Zoo Atlanta for 39 years. The team has not received any complaints that the name is racist, marketing director Laura Fedrigo said.

Locally, there was little reaction to the name change until Grant and the others saw a small item on the Silverbacks in last Saturday's Buffalo News.

They say it's not much of a leap from the Silverback name to offensive terms such as "gorilla," "ape" or "monkey."

The critics also did not like the logo, which shows an intense, red-skinned gorilla pointing at the viewer. "I did find it offensive. It looked like an angry black man," said Eva M. Doyle, a columnist for the Buffalo Criterion newspaper. "I think it's offensive to people who are looking at it from a historical perspective."

Frank Mesiah, the head of the NAACP's Buffalo chapter, and Bryon J. McIntyre, a Buffalo firefighter who writes for the Buffalo Challenger newspaper, both recalled a comment made by Laurence Michael Powell, one of the Los Angeles police officers who arrested motorist Rodney King in 1991.

Before King's arrest, Powell described over the radio a domestic dispute involving a black couple as something out of the movie "Gorillas in the Mist."

Mesiah addressed the topic this week on a radio call-in show he hosts on WUFO. and Willie L. Warren planned to tackle the issue on his show this morning. Critics are not calling for an organized protest or boycott of the Silverbacks, but they do hope to personally ask team officials to change the name.

But Cox and Jacob said the team has no intention of changing the name.

"This is ridiculous. [They're upset] because of a name? They need to look at the bigger purpose and the mission of the team," said Cox, referring to a youth-education program titled "Do Your Best, Never Quit."

Oregon State Lady Beavers.

offensive possibly, funny as all hell, yes.

now my question is if that University has a neo natzi skin head faction sports team are they allowed to call themselves the Oregon State Shaved Beavers?

I'd consider teams like the Washington Redskins as having a much more offensive sounding name than Silverbacks.

This is the only thing I found that could be construed as racist, ironically enough. In fact, the entire attack on the team name and logo has the opposite effect than intended.

People are too sensitive, and although the team name is just bad (and I'm sure the logo is even worse), peoples' hypersensitivity is really getting out of hand nowadays.

The artwork on the logo SUCKS. It looks like a twelve year old did it. I consider that equally as offensive. The least they could've done was have a professional designer/ illustrator do it.

Equating 'silverback' with racism is quite a stretch, IMO.

At some point, we have to recognize that, if people being offended by something is going to be our litmus test, then we'll never have sports names because if we open ourselves up to it, someone can be offended by any name.

Way over sensitive – over the top in fact. I thought it was stupid when people didn’t like “Redskins”, “Chiefs” or “Warriors” but this is beyond insanity.

Chiefs and Braves are no different from Kings and Vikings. I don't see a problem. But some names are out of line:

Washington Redskins
Tupelo Coons
Newark Guidos
Knoxville Rednecks
San Diego Wetbacks
Detroit Defendants
Miami Vice
Memphis Humidity

Our high school tem is still The Redskins.

Im sympathetic to the native americans but whatever.

I have no problem with any of them.

They are the names of sports teams – why would any team give it’s self a name they didn’t respect? If you hate wetbacks you certainly wouldn’t name yourself that.

Often something that was intended as derogatory turns into something prideful “Yankee” comes to mind as does, “Yankee Doodle”.

I doubt that any of the names were given with hateful intent and most may have dual meanings. Redskins – many warrior groups painted their faces red when going into battle. Coon – short for Raccoon, an animal often respected for its intelligence and dexterity.

I can’t say for sure why those names were chosen, but I vote to stay the hell out of it.

Did you see the Wetbacks signed Cedric Jones to play forward? They way overpaid for Jones. Dumbasses.

I'm a fan of the Loredo Throatgaggers and Fort Wayne Cunt Spankers. Both of these fine organizations are consistent winners and have a solid fan base. Oh, and great 'traditional' stadiums with all the modern amenities.

Isn't the suggestion that blacks look like gorillas itself the most racist part of this whole kerfuffle, a claim made by the black groups themselves?

Such is often the case. Radical groups stepping on their own toes.

It would seem that way, until you consider what the real objective is here.

My fave is the Northern Colorado University's Fighting Whites!

They have two logo's, one looks like Ward Cleaver and the other is a hillybilly redneck in coveralls with no shoes.

You would think these so-called black leaders should be just as up-in-arms about the fact that 50 Cent's "G-Unit" is actually short for "Gorilla Unit".

Of course, 50 could have easily named his crew "Guerrilla Unit" which would imply some sort of miltant and/or pro-black stance. But no, he's opted to label himself and his cronies as equal to a bunch of apes.

Many black people are very adept at embarassing themselves, they don't really need any outside influences to help them.

Thanks, G.
I don't think either the logo or the name are racist. There again, I'm not black and noone has ever called me a gorilla.

Prediction: the thugs and rappers today being lauded as "edgy" and "authentic" by the chattering classes will be, in 20 years, considered the Amos 'n' Andy / Uncle Remus figures of the generation, reviled as semi-literate cartoons and stereotypes.

It seems that everything is offensive to somebody... no need to go around bitching about it unless they actually mean it in a harmful way.

Porch Monkey... :p

I'm taking it back!

At 6-4 and 245 pounds, I've been compared to a gorilla, but she said it in a moment of passion and, I am quite certain, it was a compliment. :D
