Is there anyone out there who is into the gothic lifestyle besides myself. Work doesn't count!! I am just wondering because it seems like oh 10 years ago it was a lot more predominate then it is now. It may be a fantasy for some but I am asking about those who express it in "the real world". Just curious.

I am new to literotica, so I can't tell you who is goth here, but I can say that goth is very much alive and well on Yahoo groups, and a large number of the goths I meet there are into bdsm as well.

I have a list of gothic-sex groups I compiled awhile ago that I'd be glad to send you (or post here if there is any interest from others--speak now). I am not goth--too old, missed the bus, lol--but I enjoy goth culture very much and collect erotic pictures of gothic women.

Americans (I am one and guilty as charged) get an abysmal education in history, its trends, and its effect on our current lives. Every old thing that re-emerges is seen as something brand new, and is also often attributed to quite trivial sources. sources that are themselves actually just symptoms of an emerging and contagious meme.

The Gothic frame of thinking and feeling has been around for centuries and its thread never completely dies out. At times in history it manifests itself more obviously in the outside culture because the times and the culture are ripe for it. During other times it may seem not to exist but it's still there, alive in a minority too small to notice.

I don't understand the gothic frame of mind completely and never will, I am, tempermentally, too much the perpeutual optimist, but I'm not blind either and it's easy to see how these current times evoke, for more than just a handful of individuals, an embracing of death and darkness.

You are correct. The current word for this phenomenon used to describe a raiding Germanic people who were very warlike and dark indeed: Goths or Visgoths. That's about all I know about them.

A really large erruption of Gothic thinking emerged several centuries ago during the great cathedral-building times. Another came after that, in the Victorian era. Perhaps Victorians at that time assumed, like many do now, that their "trend" was caused by a badly written Shelly novel and it's prime character, Frankenstein.

I am a member of an unusual gothic group on Yahoo that has demonstrated with photographic evidence that the gothic theme re-emerged as well in the first few decades of the 20th century. A lot of the starlets of that time have a clear and distinctive "goth" look. The photography at that time, as well, was similar to that in the photo I posted to this thread: B&W or sepia toned, dark and moody, evokative "dark" themed backgrounds.

Perhaps it might be helpful if you provided some more information on what "Goth" is. Asides from the information posted by UCE, what does the Goth culture value, define itself etc.

I would be interested in knowing as I must confess that I, like SexyChele, thought it was a recent trend, and I am pretty well versed in European history.

Actually, unless one is a complete barbarian - according to what is out there on the 'net - then one belongs to what is considered the recent "trend" of Goth. A distinctive thought/dress/philosophy that stemmed from the punk rock movement of the late 1970's/early 1980's.

Different cultures have been captivated by death in varying degrees throughout history, that is true. But I've yet to find any sound research that shows that a "Goth" lifestyle has been one long continuous flow throughout humanity.

But then, I don't know everything, and since I've evidently already insulted some people on this thread, I'm outta here....

This has little to do with literature, but in the plauge years of the middle ages there were numerous "death cults" and a great deal of fascinating macabre art (depicting death as a person--skeleton or hooded figure--interacting in interesting ways with the living) was produced. That, plus the gargoyles and other horrific beasties produced in Catherdral sculpture makes me think that the gothic mindset was in a revival period back then, as well.

Some of the most fascinating pictures I've ever seen were of a church somewhere in Eastern Europe whose inner structures (chandileers, naves, furniture even) were built entirely with human bones. There were a lot of bone sculptures as well. Didn't the Discovery channel or some station like that do a feature on this church once?

Good question. Well usually if you go toward the "gothic" style you know. I was hoping these "people/person" would pop up on their own, basically "hunting" for anyone who would consider themselves gothic. But for all of you out there who don't really know. I think the term gothic is different for everybody. Obviously as we have seen in this thread there are many different opinions of what a gothic is. I think sometimes the opinion can be a little off or sometimes a lot off. Right this second I can't really put into words how I personally think of gothic. But I will think of it today. I don't know it's almost like you can't really put it into to words it's just a state of being. I don't know maybe I am totally off, a little loopy <shrug> Oh well.

The few times I have been to BDSM clubs in NYC, all of the scenesters who were doing the elaborate productions were extremely gothadelic. THere's always some guy with long dyed black hair in a pony tail and evil black satantic goatee, wearing a black vest over a white pirate shirt, tight black pants and knee high boots, wielding a toy, or stroking a bound witchy woman with an ice-cold vibrator.
