Thursday I was struck by how Brett Kavanaugh acted less like a Supreme Court Justice (or even an appeals court judge) and more like a small child, throwing an unhinged temper tantrum. He didn’t act at all like a man who can make important decisions that would affect millions of people while being fair or impartial. He seemed more like a spoiled child who has no experience in having his authority or honesty challenged and has a meltdown when forced to deal with real-world consequences.
He also seemed disturbingly like a schoolyard bully, in the way that he called people names, attempted to dismiss accusations, mislead questioners, distort the truth and distract from the issue at hand.
I spent a great deal of time thinking how horrible it would be having an unhinged child like this as a Supreme Court Justice, and then I realized that Kavanaugh is not an isolated case. The Republicans have a disturbing tendency to promote unhinged, irresponsible children into high positions of authority.
It doesn’t take long to uncover evidence of this. Just look at the man who nominated Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.
Donald Trump is a reckless, irresponsible, intellectually-lazy child who has bragged about his ability to sexually-assault women and get away with it. He chronically throws temper tantrums when he doesn’t get his way and hurls childish insults at the FBI, CNN, the Washington Post, the New York Times, our NATO allies, investigative journalists, judges, the United States Constitution, and basically anyone or anything that hinders him from getting his way.
In addition to throwing childish temper tantrums, Trump refuses to do his job. He won’t read his daily intelligence briefings, he won’t engage in diplomacy, he won’t defend America against Russian cyberattacks and spends an alarming amount of time golfing, holding hate-filled rallies, watching television and sending out childish tweets. All the actual WORK is done by other people.
Lyndsey Graham is another Republican known for throwing childish temper tantrums, most recently
he threw a full-blown tantrum on the floor of the United States Senate, and angrily claimed that Brett Kavanaugh (not the women that he assaulted) has been through hell. He also threatened Democrats and proclaimed that if he didn’t get his way, he would do his best to obstruct nominees by Democratic presidents
And of course, it doesn’t stop with Kavanaugh, Trump and Graham. Trump confidant and former adviser Roger Stone has become famous for his profanity-laced temper tantrums. Roger Stone has been so abusive and hostile with his harassment and tantrums that his Twitter account was suspended, to keep Stone from using Twitter’s network to harass and abuse other people on the network.
In recent history, I’ve also seen Republicans such as Greg Gianforte, Michael Grimm, Rick Perry, Bill O’Reilly, Alex Jones, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck all throw angry, unbalanced temper tantrums.
Scary as this may sound, it seems that this sort of childish, irresponsible behavior is the new normal of the Republican Party.
I’ve seen bullying, childish lies, childish threats, childish ultimatums, name calling, pouting and temper tantrums become very nearly commonplace in the Republican Party, but almost nothing in the way of actual leadership.
Is this seriously the best the Republican Party can do? Aren’t there ANY ADULTS left in the GOP?
