Are PM's out of style?

With all the technology these days, the camming, skype, robotic hump machines...do people even PM anymore?

Back in the late 90's, when the internet became affordable to people, PMing/IMing was the way to chat with members of the opposite/fairer sex.

I miss those days, and the thrill of logging on to find a long missive, enticing flirt, or on those lucky days, a sexy photo (that took 20 minutes to download.)

Tell me others miss those days as well...and maybe we can rekindle that fun....

I don't think PMing/IMing is necessarily out of style - my PM box is currently sitting at 90% full and I need to delete some messages if I plan on keeping up with any conversations I have. But I will admit that I usually start off with PM and then move to something more instantaneous.

And there is only one person I do talk to outside of PM right now...but "he's kind of a big deal." :)

Hope you find that one you're looking for though.

Thanks...hope you are right. And while it's nice to maybe carry that outside the confines of a place like this, I enjoyed the online play in the past and hope I can continue that going forward...

I'm something of a Luddite... I PM, email. You're right. I'm heading for extinction. (help!)

Yes, there are people who still PM, and IM, too, without all the fancy extras. Sounds like we have the same internet history and nostalgia. I remember when IRC was the hot new thing. So, I do enjoy logging on and finding messages in my inbox, and some of my friendships are primarily, if not only, via messaging. You're bringing back some old memories with this post. :)

Skype here isn't an option because the phoneline onto the estate is too ropey for full broadband instead of mobile - it's the same situation over most residential areas of London).

I spent my early internet years getting up at uncivilised hours to surf at 1p a minute, downloading with 10 mins to go, and reading the emails while peak use was too expensive.

Which partly explains why I prefer the slow reveal - it can be more interesting taking almost a year to figure out what somebody's really like from the bits they drop here and there.

Also, that information is far harder to consistently lie about than the bio cooked up and typed out in half an hour or less. Your height, hair colour, and job is less relevant than knowing if you're the type of person I'd trust at my back.

Yes. I remember before abbreviations (I know most of them now...well, IRC) Old memories...
(robotic hump machines?)

I find it exciting to see a PM from someone I have never met - most are about the "bump" in my AV.

I'd imagine the problem isn't that PMs are going out of style, but that the messages themselves lack any ounce of creativity or interest. I don't send out quantity messages, so the few PMs I do send out generally are well received because I've put some thought into it, and some humour, and refer back to things the OP said.

And then, I try to move to IM, but for initial chatting PMs work fine.

PM's work fine for me. I have lots of people here that I PM with regular. I also have some that have moved to email along with PM. Others have moved to Yahoo or Kik. Each person has their own comfort zones or ease of use. I enjoy Kik for ease of use and ease of replies. PM here is a bit of a pain when on the iPhone but I'm sure others would say I'm crazy for thinking that.

I only PM. I will not download YIM, KIK, Skype, etc., onto my phone or tablet. Don't want them.

I like PM's! But I am very old school. I don't usually reply to those asking for a kik or y! screenname. I don't have either.

PM's

I'm still waiting for that one PM from someone here on LIT. She probably does not know I exist and I would not confront her in any way. But I have dropped hints. That's just how I am.

Dream Big.

A sincere hello pm with a little about yourself or a mention of a mutual subscribed thread is a great start!
Dreams take steps of action. Good Luck!

I miss AOL. Staying in random chat rooms for hours.

I'm also nostalgic for the "good old days" of IM and chat rooms - that's why I like Google Hangouts so much. I hardly ever use the video or audio chat options, I just like the IM feature mostly. And obviously, I'm in Team PM!

Hangouts here myself. Seems safe on the phone to me.

I spent a lot of time in chat rooms years ago. I was on MSN when they had chat room (are they gone?). There was one room on there that was for the local area I lived in. It was cool talking with people in the area. I miss that kind of fun. I haven't tried Google Hangouts, might have to look into that.

Well, thanks for all the participation on this topic. Seems like I'm not such as big an anachronism as I thought.

So glad to hear that there are so many that still enjoy the PM's and chat room. For nostalgia, anyone remember Excite.com? (not what some of you might think it is...)

Any a special shout out to the lovely lady who sent me my first PM on these boards...what a generous gesture....

My location is actually the North East, not Nebraska. That being said, I did get a chance years ago to hunt around the Falls City area. Raised in the mid-west and spent most of my time hunting birds out in western Kansas. Some of the best pheasant and quail hunting on the planet...

IM is preferred over PM/email, hands down. However, my one imaginary friend?...email.
Which, I suppose is better than the telegraph..

I generally prefer IM, though there are some who write such good PMs/emails, that I miss getting them when things go to more immediate chat, even though I really enjoy chatting with them, too.
