Actually, it's not a matter of understanding. You're confusing that with the subtle art of pretending to care, which we are quite skilled at. They even make us take classes when we're younger (what do you think really happens in Cub Scouts meetings?).

Do you still mean the first thing you asked and, if so why don't you just say that. Men lie to women too, of course, and say things they don't mean, but the reason for that is simple. They want to get into her pants, and are saying things they think she wants to hear, in hopes it will help in that endeavor.

If we are humans together - if that means anything, and if we have any respect, affection, or decent feeling toward each other - then we seek to understand each other.
Might we also give up that tired old saw about husbands being "trained" by their wives? How one can fail to see that as degrading to both sexes, I cannot imagine.
