Are cats smart?

I've never seen a cat that didn't sleep curled up.

I've had six cats total over the past ten years, four currently. Every last one of them I've seen stretched out sleeping, sometimes even on their backs with paws in the air. Very undignified, but apparently comfortable.

Dudley actively prefers to sleep stretched out. He'll curl up sometimes, but it is the exception, not the rule.

Mine has moods, sometimes stretched out and sometimes curled up. All of mine have.

Even though I'm a lurker - I'm finally motivated to tell my cat story. Years ago my late wife and I had a number of cats living with us. Two were inseperable, probably littermates. One had learned all sorts of things; would 'come', 'sit', 'roll over', etc. The other, Gisella, just ignored us. One day the two were lying cat-like side by side and wife, looking at the pair, said: "Gisella - I don't know whether you are too smart to train or too dumb to train." Then I blew it - I looked up from my book and said: "you know, wife, all these years I've been thinking the same thing about you". It took a long time for me to work my way out of the dungeon.

LOL

I got a claw in the back today for not paying attention to her. First time she has done that. She does it to wake me up. Not often thank god. The boy is a tapper. He'll tap my hand when he wants petted. And again when I stop.

I should specify - I've never had a cat that never slept curled up.

My cat demanded that I pet him. He wasn't going to stop tapping me until I did.

My girl cat does that. Sometimes she'll sneak up on me while I'm studying at the kitchen table - she can reach up to my waist if she tries.

She's the dumb one. She can get lost in an empty room. The boy is slightly smarter, but not by much - if I go in another room and shut the door, he'll meow for a few minutes and then I think he forgets that I'm in there.
