It was said on a thread that the word "doldrums" is a word that sounds likes what it means. And I thought of "approprophone" as a term for a word like that. Other words of that nature:

--squeak
--hellzapoppin
--groan
--roar
--sludge

Have you any?

murmur

But I think the word you're looking for to describe these words is onomatopoeia. Though your word is much more... aprops.

That's so antiquity.

*Finally pays for never learning what that word meant.

I'd venture that appropophones might be a larger class of words than onomatopoeia. Squeak, groan and roar are certainly onomatopoeia, 'the word phonetically imitates the sound', but doldrums? That's kind of different, it just sounds right.

And appropophone is far too good a word not to be a thing

Aside: a Swedish relative of a neighbour once told me that loads of words in Swedish are onomatopoeic. Including 'fart', the word for which sounds like this:

Prrrrrrt

*giggles childishly*
