Abstinence students still having sex
Study tracked 2,057 young people in government-funded programs
The Associated Press
Updated: 6:35 p.m. ET April 13, 2007
WASHINGTON - Students who participated in sexual abstinence programs were just as likely to have sex a few years later as those who did not, according to a long-awaited study mandated by Congress.

Also, those who attended one of the four abstinence classes reviewed reported having similar numbers of sexual partners as those who did not attend the classes, and they first had sex at about the same age as their control group counterparts — 14.9 years, according to Mathematica Policy Research Inc.

Does this really surprise anyone out there?

Obviously some religious brow-beating and scare-mongering is in order.

On a side note, do you think an abstinence class would be a good place to meet women?

I'm a bit surprised that so many were having sex with members of Congress, sure.

:D

Women? No. I doubt they were anywhere near the age of consent.

Don't you need a negative in there?

I'm a bit surprised that so many were NOT having sex with members of Congress, sure.

Oops. Silly me.

:cathappy:

Thank you, dear Fool.

I heard that tonight at work!
Made my jaw drop, guess more are having sex then i thought.
Classes won't affect activitiy, it will just make it more educated.
So the question there is? Educated sex or Ignorant sex?

I've had ignorant sex (to a degree, I knew more than some and less than others, enough to be mostly safe).

I'd like to try the educated sex part first to make an informed decision though :D

My bad. Since where I grew up we had actual sex ed, I assumed that abstinence classes only taught about abstinence and so didn't educate the kids about sex. Silly me.

*Shrugs*
i don't know?
Abstinence was discuseed in the sex ed class i had.
Over all seems like an educational study.

:cathappy:

Well yes, teaching abstinence in a sex ed class is fine since it's not the only thing discussed. Most of the abstinence classes teach abstinence only. Then the kids go and have sex anyway without the benefit of having been taught how to protect themselves.

Wit. Cool!

While the numbers aren't that surprising, (come on, think back, how old were you?) what is really surprising is that anal sex and oral sex are not considered to be having sex by teens today. The risks that they are taking are amazingly stupid in this educated day.

Exactly what is an "abstinence class"? Shouldn't it take just a couple minutes to explain the concept (there are no tools or directions involved, no timetables, no statutory concerns, etc.)

Exactly.

Hey, kids. You know that sex thing?

DON'T DO IT!

19?
so are today's kids having sex earlier? or not?
or are they just participating in all the playful orgasms?

I'm shocked, shocked, shocked to hear this. Obviously, this report needs to be studied by the Bush Administration. I'm sure the results will be far different and much more accurate once it's properly edited

Evidently I'm a little shocked at the average 14.9 years. My first (hi Fuzzy one!) was at 19. But know the ones who were the "leaders" in Jr. High but I hate to think of that as the norm or average. You don't know who you are much less how to please someone else.

i think its crazy
A bummer, too. I mean, it was such a simple solution and we all know that simple solutions are suppose to work and make problems like these easy for all of society. You tell the kids, "Keep it in your pants!" and they listen to you until they're married. All sorts of problems solved.

Now we gotta start all over again and find a new ulta-simple answer that'll stop them from having sex. I vote for chastity belts.
