AOL to Launch New French Service on Monday - Paper
Thu Aug 15,11:13 AM ET
LONDON (Reuters) - AOL Time Warner's Internet unit will introduce a new economical flat rate dial-up Internet service plan in France on Monday in the hopes of boosting demand, a newspaper reported on Thursday.
A spokesman for AOL Europe declined to comment on the story, which appeared in Thursday's New York Times.
The paper said the new unlimited-service plan will be priced at 24.99 euros ($24.40) per month, a potential savings for heavy Internet users who previously paid a per-minute phone charge.
Subscriber growth and advertising revenue has slumped considerably for the company's Internet businesses across the globe, forcing it to cut back on marketing initiatives for the first time in Europe.
In July, AOL said it had added 78,000 subscribers in Europe during the second quarter, a sizeable drop-off from the 378,000 customer additions it notched in the second quarter of 2001.
The loss-making AOL Europe, a division of U.S. media firm AOL Time Warner, reported it had six million customers across France, the United Kingdom and Germany last quarter.
AOL said it has 1.2 million subscribers in France.
According to investment bank Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein, AOL is the third largest Internet service provider (ISP) in France trailing Wanadoo , a division of France Telecom , and LibertySurf, owned by Italy's Tiscali , respectively.

Fucking France. Fucking Germany. *sigh*
