Hmmmmmm...

You can call me a British bitch if you want, but your advert doesn't really inspire a lot of faith in me...

Your words such as "and editor" and "definately" would put me off a little.

Sorry

In some people I inspired alot. The responses to the ad keep pouring in. If I were you, I would give Love & Peace another try, it stinks.

Oh well, I suppose I deserved that...

No you didn't. Anyone offering to edit should be more careful of the orthography in his/her advertisement if s/he wants to be trusted.

I agree. It was a legitimate thing to point out, and you didn't try to be particularly nasty about it or anything. I had similar concerns myself but wasn't quite sure how to voice them, since people - as just proven - often react in a touchy way.
I like my editor to be able to learn from mistakes so they can correct them when I make them, not bitch at people.

Agreed. Those of us who live by the split infinitive take the chance of being impaled on infinitive fragments.

I tend not to edit my posts ... spelling errors, grammar errors, just plain brain errors ... they all get posted.

But if I was advertising my skills as an editor, I would take an extra moment to review before I hit submit.

I'm up there with all of you now....I've just received some mails about that person saying that not only does she rewrite stories without reason but she also changes the content and add more errors than at the beginning before it was edited.

I don't know where she's coming from but I'd recommend everyone to be really wary of her. When pointed out that she also had made errors and done things she wasn't asked to she became nasty and attacked the intelligence and education of the person.

Thanks for the heads up Cibelle. :S Dumb me, I tend to trust it if someone says they've got editing experience, as it's difficult to check a resumee over the Lit forum. :S I will definitely be recanting my offer to let her rummage through my stuff.

There are plenty of first-rate editors hanging out around here. It just takes a little time to learn who's who.

I don't think that makes you dumb at all. If you hadn't listened when LadyC posted a warning, then maybe a little bit :)

But there's things online you can sometimes only find out through experience. Happened to me to, in other contexts. :rose:

Yeah unfortunately we all learn through trial and errors :(

No, Falling, it doesn't make you dumb....anyone that admits of his/her errors and work to correct them is NOT dumb in my book. It takes courage and strenght to come forward and stand up for oneself.

Okay, I'm down from my soap box now :)

You are absolutely 100% correct, snooper. Not only that but an editor should be careful of how he/she eidts.

I had a total disaster from this one today and then she blasted me for not knowing the language, flaunting her fancy degrees at a big university. Unfortuantely the only thing they signify is that she graduated, not that she learned anything.

I asked for homophone checking and punctuation correction. Instead I got a total rewrite because "my version was boring". She had the unmitigate gall to completely change the physical appearance of one of my characters

I'm sure this wont "sit" well with her but she had one of my ladies "setting" in a chair. That is not really comforting coming from an editor.

And do you enjoy reading whole screens of word with no breaks? Yep, she must cause my paragraph breaks were removed. Throwing quotes from multiple people in the same paragraph? No problem for her...she made a change so that they WOULD, instead of separating them.

And then she threatened me with publishing the copy of my story that she still has.

We all make mistakes and I've never had an editor who didn't. I've probably never edited a story that I didn't make a mistake. But let's admit that we're human, work WITH authors instead of against them, and learn from our mistakes.

..... Wow.

Very glad I didn't ever hear back from her (like most editors on Lit, she probably didn't want to do something not "erotica.") or send her anything.

I run an editing/beta reader forum myself, and I do a lot of editing and beta reading for a lot of different genres, and I would never be so blatantly abusive towards those who came to me, trusting me for help. It's... wrong.

I am very, very grateful to those who caught this person out, and warned everyone else. I will make sure, next time I ask for someone to run through my work, to check their credentials with you guys first.

Thanks again, for the time, effort, support and compassion you guys show to those of us less gifted (or just incapable of editing their own work!).

Last night when I wrote my little reply to MissGeorgiaUSA I felt a bit guilty, I must admit...

I am not one to be rude or offensive but I felt I just had to say something and as fieryjen pointed out, I wasn't really nasty - I did apologise.

And I worried that I would be seen as a stuck-up Brit with a snobby attitude. But I'm not. I just love to see the language written correctly and "definately" still irks me.

I would never aspire to be an editor. I have the greatest admiration for those on here who give up their time to help the writers, and I know that I just don't have the skills to edit other people's work.

But now I feel a little better and thanks to everyone for making me feel welcome here on Lit.

janiexx :rose:

Oh, and I forgot to say - I'm just going to go and finish Chapter 4 of my stinky story... :D

You're more than welcome Janie,

Unfortunately I didn't see her posts before or I would have been the one pointing out that her advert didn't inspire confidence with the errors in it.

You were the one who took the brunt of her frustration, and for that I apologize, but I'm also thanking you...criticizing her on the public place allowed everyone to see how "well" she reacts when criticized.

Ooooh no, don't apologise LadyCibelle.

I thought it was funny and I had a giggle this morning when I saw her reply.

The one great thing about Literotica is that is enables writers to develop a lovely thick skin. Mine is toughening nicely!

 That is just... I'm at a loss for words. Seriously.

She threatened you...? Wait, to post your own story under her name at lit? Or didI not read that right? The fuck?

Like Lady C, I didn't notice the exchange immediately--sure glad Snooper and Techsan did.

Anyone can make a typo now and then, but it's "definately" unacceptable for an editor not to step up and take responsibility for his or her own gaffes instead of becoming defensive and obnoxious.

By the way, I remember your work: not stinky at all, although it is depressingly well spelled. :)

Haha!

I had a writer apply to me once in my day job and his cover letter had a typo in the first sentence. He was a great guy and I thought he could do the job, but I just couldn't hire him. I apologized to him for this and encouraged him to reapply in 6 months, but I just couldn't hire him I said. He was a sterling guy and he did understand, bless 'im.

I shared this occurrence (though not his name; I had no desire to cause him professional grief, after all) with a fellow writing manager. She laughed and said "I got a letter from someone who wanted to work for me as an editor. There was a classic line in her cover letter that read 'And, in addition, my poofreading skills are excellent.' That one stayed up on the bulletin board outside my office for a couple years."

Call me Mr. Picky, but I wouldn't hire an editor with multiple egregious errors in their pitch, either.

Good thing my glass wasn't in my hand...I'd have dropped it and spilled everything on me. :D

Yet another one guilty of the drinkspew... that is just priceless. I make no claims to perfection, but I will say... I earned the title Master of the Purple Pen honestly... simply because I'm opinionated and harsh. *shrugs* and I think I may stick around here...

So, anybody want an editor/beta reader?

:D
