I'm writing an erotic novel and it's near 120 pages and was wondering if people liked reading that stuff or just the 3-page slam-bam stories that are sex from the get go?

I only ask because I like the long, drawn out stories where the characters are built up a bit before the fucking. Anyone else like longer stories?

Personally, I prefer the slam-bam type, and that's what I write. Do you mean 3 Lit. pages or three pages on the HD, which would be less than a full Lit. page. Most of my smut is about 5,000 words, but there are any who read the longer stories. If you go to the index page and check out the most popular stories, the leaders will be long stories.

Yeah, I like the longer stories usually. The last one I wrote was 90 pages and 95% of the people who commented dug it. There was just one guy who wanted me to shorten it to like two pages and make it just about the fucking. lol I wasn't about to do that.

There's a flavor for everyone on this site. I've gotten my highest votes on my novel posted here, and the views have been pretty good, too. It's been my experience that those who read in the N&N section are more patient and open-minded. Anyone willing to read through more than 25 Lit pages is going to give your story some serious attention.

gitcher arse over to the novel-writing support thread, we need you! :cattail:

I write mostly short stories, and now want to attempt novels. But I am worried that I'll lose my ability to write short.

I apply the same standards to anything I read; I want to be able to identify with the protagonist by the time I put the book down. In a short erotic story, I use the sex itself to establish and build up the characters. In an erotic novel, my theory is--- that I establish characters in such a way that the reader gets an idea of how they'll be in bed and wants to see that happen... That's what works best for me as a reader, I think.

Exactly. I spend the first 5-7 pages just establishing the characters, then usually somewhere between the 12th or 15th page will something sexual happen. I like teasing the reader and making them want to get to the point where the characters finally consummate.

I'll head over to the novel section, too.

More than how they are in bed is how the characters are in other aspects of their life. That's what I find the most daunting in a novel, erotic or otherwise. In short stories, you can give some basic characterization, a few personality quirks, and leave it at that.

But when writing a novel, you really have to create the characters, give them life. That's the hard part.

That's what I like to do. Putting in those details, referring to things the character has done in the past, .etc. I also like basing characters(the lead female, anyways) on real people, actresses, .etc. I usually don't say who I'm basing them on, but I describe the characters as I would describe the real person.

For me, that makes it sexier.

Does it make it sexier for the reader though? That would depend on your skills in bringing a character to life. I often start with a real person, and sometimes a celeb-- and lately, I've just given up the fight and have written fan fiction  But the real person I draw on isn't always a celeb, and I might add characteristics from someone else. And then-- change the sex over, just to see.

I think it does. It does for me and from comments I've heard from readers, they felt the same way. It's just easier for me to visualize a character when I can base them on a real person. I can imagine how they would say dialogue, how they'd move, .etc.
