Anyone From Kansas Know About This

Yesterday on the radio, over here in the UK I heard a short item about a small town in Kansas that has passed a local ordinance - that every adult should own a gun.

As I live in a country where gun ownership is highly regulated - my mind bogled - then when I reflected upon this I saw all sorts of dramatic situations such an ordinance might create.

If anyone knows any more about this town and the terms of the ordinance I would be interested to know more.

Kansas

Not quite as kooky as you read it, Jon. There will be exemptions and it was not passed by a full majority. Small town.

The town is Geuda Springs and they have not passed the law yet. They are looking at this because they do not have a police force.

The town wants toi cut some of the crime down. By having every adult in town required to have a hand gun, they think that the bad guys will go somewhere else.

edited to add: the requirement is for every 'head of household' to own a gun, not every adult.

Hey hang on - I was not knocking the place - of course I am bemused - I live in a country where it is illegal to own a revolver or automatic and to get a lisense to own a rifle or shotgun you have to go through a lot of police checks etc.

However the scope for dramatic situations are vast - what will happen if someone is a consciencous objector - will they run that family out of town.
As they cannot afford to run a police force - I did pick that part up on the radio, also the bit about the insane being exempt - how are they going to enforce the law? Will any citizen be able to stop someone and demand proof that they have a gun?

You have to admit there are implications that the writer can play with.

Jon, I didn't think you were knocking the place, just found an article for you from Kansas. C.O.'s will be exempt and those who 'should' have guns will be fined 10 bucks if they don't. Cheap protest it seems.

Congrats on NaNo too!

So, question is, what is a 'head of household'? My current houehold have two heads. Three, if you count the cat.

Once again, a simple question has been rendered hopelessly tangled and insoluble in the AH. Let's pat ourselves on the back. Well done.

It's no big.

Most people in Kansas, particularly rural areas, own guns anyway. Well, except for the weirdos.

Yeah, they won't settle for less than shotguns and semi-automatics.

A gun?! *A* gun?! As in SINGULAR . . . ONE . . . LESS THAN TWO?!

What the hell are they going to do with all the extras? Most of the self respecting Kansans I know have a full gun case with a locker in the basement for the 'spares'.

There are cities in the USA where it is illegal to own
a handgun. (Of course, such laws a fairly ineffective.;
buy a handgun elsewhere. Unlike the UK (or the US) as a
whole individual US cities have no border or custom agents.)
I've seen proposals to require everybody to won a handgun.
The proposals I've seen were more political comments on
the cities prohibiting gun ownership than serious
proposals.

From the outside, the only enforced American gun control regulation appears to be that one American citizen should not fire a handgun into another American citizen, unless they have a darn good reason, or a fairly adequate excuse.

Anything else would infringe on the gun manufacturer's Second Amendment right to make a living.

WRONG. If you count the cat there's only one.
