Anybody Muslim?

Every Friday at 1:30pm my neighborhood is over run by cars and droves of people going to what I think is a Muslim church? (women dressed in long beautiful gowns, some with their faces covered others not) (please excuse my ignorance in getting the terms right) The service only lasts about 30 minutes and then everybody leaves. My questions...why on Friday? and why only 30 minutes? I've driven past on occasion during the service and I see all the men standing at one side of the building facing East and bowing in unison...no women, where did they go? I never see this happen any other day of the week.

Can someone enlighten me a little on this particular faith or tell me where I could learn more?

I am a Muslim,I shall attempt to answer your questions.


1.Islamic Mosque or Majid is the correct term for the place of worship

2.the women that had their faces covered were wearing what is called a full Chador.

3.The significance of Friday is that that is the day of Allah{God} that he commanded that his followers give to him thru the Pbuh{Prophet] Mohammed.

4.the reasoning behind only 30 mins is that Muslims are required to pray 7 times a day,We only get together to hear a teacher lead prayer and read the holy Quran

5.When we pray we are required to face the holy city of Mecca,no matter where we are in the world.

6.Women pray seperatly as the P'buh commanded.

BTW...I am an American born Muslim,so before anyone starts getting a bit too excited and blameing me for treating women badly,realize that I have AMERICAN values,not middle eastern ones.

Just like in Christianity and most other stereotyped groups, it is only the bad apples that get all the publicity and build the negative ideas.
