Those actually look to be a bit more comfortable than standard S&W style police cuffs..

police cuffs are not comfortable at all. Especially if you struggle in them - they can bruise you really REALLY easily. One tug and you gave a bruise around your wrist.
That's why many sex-shop cuffs are done with some soft material.
But the most comfortable ones are still leather cuffs. Because they are wide and so they distribute the pressure over the large area, it's very hard to get yourself damaged in them.
These? They are metal and very thin. If you struggle you can bruise yourself too. And let's face it, why do you need cuffs if not for holding you while you struggle to escape from something?

I have been cuffed twice by law enforcement and once by corrections including leg chains and waist chains.
The first was what I think you are talking about, cuffs with short chain between. I think I could have pulled a Houdini.
Corrections was similar but linked to waist chains and connected to the next prisoner. Leg cuffs were like wrist cuffs but a bit longer chain between. Awful chaffing no matter how carefully you shuffled along.
The second type of handcuff was similar but a hinge between the cuffs instead of a chain. Very awkward, very restrictive. No movement was practical in them.
None of them would I use in play.
