Is anyone here currently, or has been a truck driver?

I heard that this job is extremely stressful and rigorous and often involves driving cross-continent, eating at truck stops, and sleeping in your tractor trailer. Also, you have to deliver your load to X location at a certain time and date. If you're late, you'll be written up.

How does this job pay? Do trucking companies offer retirements, benefits, and insurance plans?

I was a truck driver for most of my working years!!! I loved that type of work. It is not an easy life. There are long hours, dense traffic and bad people to deal with. But the wages were real good and i got to see parts of the country that most people never see.The last over the road company that i worked for was the greatest and very understanding when i had problems. I had a regular route every week with the san=me customers . I drove 3500 miles each week and made 25 deliveries and three pick-ups. All of these were timed stops I am now semi retired. I work 6 months ( spring and summer ) and am home every night. Driving is a hard job,,,, but a great one. If you are thinking about this as a job,,, all the best to you. If you do this keep a sharp eye for the ladies in passing cars. In 40 plus years driving i saw everything except childbirth and murder. Be careful and enjoy yourself. Remember that we only get to do this once.

Why would you be a cross-country truckie, when you can go drive a HUGE truck on a minesite for about 4 times the pay?
Everything paid while on site - accomodation, food, recreation, etc.
And the hours are better.
And you get every 5th week off, with travel home paid for.
