Any suggestions ....Cat Owners?

I read somewhere a long, long time ago that if your cat has a habit of jumping on the counters, to get some double-sided tape and put a line across the counters about 2 inches from the edge. That's roughly where they land when they jump, and they don't like the sticky, so it teaches them not to jump on the counters.

I've never tried it and I can't recall the source, so take it with a grain of salt.

I think punishing cats after the fact is sorta useless. They can't seem to associate the punishment with the act, unless they're in the middle of it when being punished. Then ye olde water gun is simplest and least cruel, but it's got to be paired with the offensive action for that to work.

Don't bother to punish her if you haven't caught her in the act...it won't stick.

My advice: don't leave food out on the counter, and get her her own sponge. My cat was a sponge-stealer too until we gave her one of the old ones tied to a bathrobe belt. It was her favorite toy after that.

Shock collars work good for training bird dogs. And if you get her trained by November I will take her pheasant hunting in SD with me.

Well, then hide the sponges too.

As far as punishment goes, squirt guns are supposed to be good (but I can imagine that they aren't always at hand at the time of offense). What worked with my cat (although she never got over her biting habit) was a good loud BANG! on the counter or table with a palm or rolled up newspaper right next to her. She also responded to us making loud, long hissing sounds, "SSSS!" (I've tried this with my dogs and it doesn't work.)

oh Pyper!! You've NEVER seen a cat run so fast as the time I sprayed some canned air on my keyboard while one of my angels (yeah, right) was sitting in my lap! I think I still have scars on my knees from where she clawed me!

good ideas Pyperita.

will you hiss at me please?

I might find it erotic.

SSSSSSSS!!!

(The first time I did this as an automatic reaction to my dog sticking his head in the trash my family stared at me for about three seconds and then started laughing.)

Most times it is easier to train the owner than the cat. For example, I have not had butter out on my table since 1987. I like mine without teeth marks in it.

1) The two-sided tape thing works, I've done it.

2) Maybe kitty should have her own room (with a door) when she'd left alone? My cat has one, but he only gets closed up in there when we have lots of little kids over. I sometimes find him sleeping in his "bed" even when the door is open and he could be sleeping with me. I think he feels safe there.

It's really difficult to reteach a cat that has picked up bad habits. One of the best ways it to set up a 'trap'. The double stick tape might work, but I don't know for sure.

What I mean by a 'trap' is something that will scare the bejesus out of her/him when he/she jumps up on the counter. I don't know how much counter space you have, so that may be difficult. But if you can, place something on the counter where she jumps up (if there is a specific place that is suspect) or if she walks over that will fall and cause a lot of noise. This works really well with dogs, but it's a bit tricky with cats.

The point is, something BAD will happen when the cat does a particular thing (i.e.: jumping on counter=really loud and scary noise). But you must be consistent until the behavior stops. Otherwise, you must remove all object the cat will be attracted to. He/she won't stop until there's never anything there. But they can smell it, so that's only a temporary solution.

Cats get on counters, and it hard to stop them, period.

As far as the sponge goes, you might try putting something on it the cat hates.....perhaps some pure lemon juice, or something really nasty tasting to her/him.

I can't blame her. I'm sorta scared of that canned air stuff too. It FROSTS the keyboard!

Our kitty Siren is in big trouble.

Wolfy left a steak out to thaw on the kitchen counter.........
and she got on the counter,
pushed the package to the floor
cut the cellophane with her teeth
and
ate 1/3 of his steak.

She is in major trouble.

major.

dont mess with Wolfy's meat.

Oops! They Do Love Meat! LOL

How do we punish her appropriately

Too Late.

and

most importantly,

how do we stop her from continually doing this?

Make Her Think Twice About Yer Reaction!
AHHHH You Fucking, CAT! I'm Gonna Kill You! LOL

She also jumps up on kitchen sink while we are asleep
and eats the sponge......

brings it onto the carpet
and tears it apart.

Cover It In Black Pepper Before You Go To Sleep! LOL

She gets everything she wants
and gets all the attention she could desire

why is she doing this?

Cuz She Is A Cat, And Cats Do Strange Things?

We own the same cat? (I finally had to invest in a covered butter dish because my cat could open the cupboard I'd hide it in during the day)

I have one cat that will only drink water out of a certain glass. And it can't be fresh or cold.. it has to be old and warm water.

The other cat will only drink out of the dogs (outside) water dish or the toilet.
