Mr Penn and I are going to a concert in Philly at the Theater of the Living Arts. Is anyone familiar with this or the area? I believe it's on South Street. I'm wondering about parking, eateries, rail access, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I know the area. Lots of restaurants and limited parking on narrow residential streets. South street has a busy nightlife. :)

The nearest subway service is the Broad Street line, about 8 blocks or so away. The blocks are regular, not long, though. My husband and I always dr I e to this area. He's a Philly kid. We manage to find parking by driving around, usually walking four or five blocks. There are a handful of pay parking lots, too, and we tend to use the one on 6th St. and South. I think it's called EZ Park.

Enjoy your concert!

Thanks, talis! I gather it's a safe enough are to walk around in? We'd just need to get from the car to a place to eat, then then show, then the car.

The area is safe enough. Big city, and all that, but there are usually plenty of people about and lots of traffic, unless you're out to some very late hour. I've never encountered a problem other than some uneven pavement. :D

LOL I'm good with cities. I lived in and around Washington, DC, for about fifteen years and went to plenty of events there. I actually grew up in South Jersey and now live about 25 miles from Philly, but I haven't spent much time in the city itself so I'm just checking around.

The area is fine. Expect it to be very crowded. I would just park in the one of the paid lots rather than drive around forever looking for a spot and then worrying about the meter. there is a parking garage behind the SuperFresh at 10th & South. I haven't been down there to eat recently enough to recommend anything, but I did have a nice dinner at an Italian joint along there a couple years ago. No security danger down there, just very busy. Lots of cops, though.

Thanks, Jake. I'll keep that in mind. We've been told by friends that we should just drive, so we will. I'd just like to make a little of an evening out of it as well, hence requests for eateries and such.

I lived in the Philaburbs for many years, and South St is one of my favorite areas. Take some time to visit the Magic Gardens if you can.

What type and price level for food? There are some very nice restaurants in the area, and some basic eateries like Jim's Steaks, if you want the genuine Phillyfood experience. If you're in the mood for something more intimate and high end, a friend of mine's husband has a spectacular little place not far away. It's Mexican with heavy French influence (sounds improbable but OMG it works!) It's not cheap, but not insanely expensive, either, and you definitely get what you pay for. Save room for dessert, they're all homemade.

Oh, thanks, desertslave! I'd say kind of casual, mid-price is what we're looking for, although we could probably be convinced to splurge -- not that we aren't already splurging on the concert. :) That Mexican place sounds great. Don't think we'll have time for the Magic Gardens this time around, but maybe another time.
