and i didn't mean to leave out you ladies who have accumulated a few years. (old fartettes?) with the exception of the political threads and the ones on quantum quarkisms i find that i have some, if not a lot of knowledge about most of the other threads started.

it occured to me that if anyone was keeping up with or gave a damn what i had to say about anything they might think i was just a know it all. all it really is is that i have an average intelligence and a rabid curiosity about everything and i've had enough years under my belt to have pursued a lot of what i'm interested in.

do any of the rest of you feel the same way or am i really just a smart assed know it all. (careful, i bruise easily)

unclej, Knowlege took a severe devaluation in my cerebral marketplace when I was 23 and I knew everything. I knew more than anyone else in the world.
Then I forgot it all.
There was a point at which I abandoned knowing for screwing,
then screwing for creating, creating for becoming and now I'm satisfied with simply being.

My knowledge bank has been replaced by a search engine, so I know what you mean.

I must say, though that whenever I dip back in to Lit, there are always surprises and fun - I usually end up laughing at someone - miles has had me lauging and I've only opened one thread. But I've found no knowledge in there.

I know more than the average person about a few things (computers, software, electronic comms, mechanical stuff, firearms, motorcycles) so that may make it seem like I am a know it all when I talk about them, and I am very opinionated about other things (politics, religion, economics, etc.). Like you I develop an interest in something and I explore it a little more than the average person would, and having lived almost half a century I have explored more than the average person. I am also pretty good at analysis and critical thinking.

Sometimes I feel pretty good about myself, and then I run into someone half my age who knows twice as much and can pick up on new things twice as fast, and that puts me in my place.

Just the same, they may be smarter and faster, but they are rarely wiser - that usually only comes with experience, and to get experience you have to put in the time - no other way around it. You also have to think critically about stuff; I know a lot of people who are smarter and more talented than I am, but damn if they just don't get "it" most of the time - even when it is staring them right in the face. They just don't want to see the truth because they have preconceptions and misconceptions they are not willing to give up.

I think that is truly where I have the edge over some people; I am willing to critically examine whether I am right or wrong. I am wrong most of the time and willing to admit it, seek out the truth and move on, rather than cling to the past.

guy, you may be the self proclaimed head smartass here but i'm a smart ass emeritus in my little part of the world. and i'm good enough at it that i haven't taken an ass whippin' for it in years.

you've got a real way with words there freescorfr. i guess i'm still in the creating/becoming phase of my life and just enjoying the hell out of it.

stg...you actually sound like someone that might stand up and accept responsibility for who he is and what he's done. good for you. if you ever get to my part of texas the beer's on me.

Gonna chime in here even though I am not an old fart. But I am a self proclaimed know-it-all and I can back it up the majority of the time. I would hate to see myself in 20 years after learning much more than I have already. It's a scary thought.
