I do not fly fish, but at a recent auction I bought two older fly reels with 6 extra spools for them. The reels are marked Tibor w/a T inside of an oval shape, one is brass (easy to tell by the heft of it) and one appears to be gold anodized aluminium. Both operate extremely smooth and appear very well made. Were they worth $30.00? The rods are split bambo and old.

 :)

though i do flyfish i am certainly not an expert on antique gear. but i would have to guess that the bamboo rods themselves are worth at least 30 bucks if they are in any shape at all. i've got a pretty cool collection of old level wind bait casting reels. probably have 30 of them now and i honestly don't know how much they're worth. i just like 'em and i don't ever pay too much for them.

sounds like you made a deal...

I used a fly rod and small poppers to catch bluegill when I was a kid. THAT was fun! A few years ago I bought a really nice rod and reel and only used in once. The river here is so cold you really need chest waders and floats to get to the good spots. They are expensive as hell, and I just lost interest. Last time I fished the river from the bank I got skunked, while the guys who waded caught their limits.

I visited the Tibor web site and yes it appears I made a very good purchase on the reels. The rods were Orvus, they apparently still make and sell split bamboo starting at $500.00......lmao

Now all I have to do is go to fly fishing school! L.L. Bean has one of those in Maine, should keep the cub busy for a day or two!

 ;)

Fly fishing ? is that anything like ice fishing ?

friend took me ice fishin once. caught a real nice piece. put it in a fryin pan,,turned my back for a few minutes,, some SOB stole my ice and filled my fryin pan with water.

I know,,,,,,,,,lousey joke

The rods are probably worth very little unless they are in pristine condition, not much even then. The reels weren't a bad buy.

If you see any Hardy reels at anything approaching a reasonable price snap them up or better yet send me pics so I can.

I thought this was going to be a learned discussion on salmo solar.... the best and most beautiful fish in the world to take on a fly.

Nah. They're worthless. I'll pay you double for them to relieve you from the embarassment. Seriously though, hang on to this shit. From what you describe and what I know, I think you got a steal. I know another Lit member who only comes on occasionally but is into flyfishing more seriously. I'll try to reach him and turn him onto this thread. I'd be slow to let them go, really.

Ditto. That's a load of fun. I can't recall ever getting skunked when using a flyrod with those little poppers. Down here, go up a little in size with a bumble-bee or frog pattern and you'll almost always get some bass, which put on quite a display. Have bought some saltwater flies that are supposedly good for redfish and trout but haven't given that a fair shake yet.

I think i did too, did a little surfing today, and found out more about them. The bamboo poles are a good find to, they are in near perfect shape.

:D
