Any Linux Users Out There?

I'm kind of wondering how many people out there use Linux, in any form. There are a few people in my class that swear by it but I'm not willing to take the plunge just yet. I've done some research on it but I'm looking to see if anyone has some real experience with it. Thanks :)

Will be soon!

Once my Yule present to myself (new computer parts) gets here and I put it together, my old machine is becoming my Linux dialup/firewall box! Of course, I'm going to need help from friends...hehe

It's a very different creature from Windows. I think it's supposedly over the 'average PC user's' head because it's not just point and click and it does most everything for you. You need to learn it, but it's not that hard if you put your mind to it. It utilizes system resources much better. It is much more stable. It is the best choice (I hear warring opinions on RedHat vs FreeBSD on this one, hehe) for home PC/network security, although you have to build your own versus having a program do all your security for you (Like BlackICE or some such program). It does have a 'windows-like' program called xwindows that will look a bit familiar and be easier to use if your only experience with PC's has been the Windows platform. Linux has a lot of text-based stuff as well, not so much focusing on the pretty pictures to help you get things done.

One of the main downfalls is gaming, if you do any. Many games do not yet support Linux. I'll always have to have a windows box to play half the games I like to. Hopefully this will change soon! You also may have to learn new versions of some kind of programs (such as graphics editors).

I'd say the way I'm going is the way to go if you are going to try it out and are a newbie at it all. Have a machine online already, to use for research and/or bugging your techgeek friends with questions. Have fun, poke around, trial by error, and if you fubar everything...just wipe clean and reload, hehe! :)

I guess I'm about to take that step into further geekdom...is that so wrong? Lol... And hey, the Linux penguin and the BSD daemon are cute as hell, how can you go wrong?!

*hugs*

Thanks Mae! As part of my course we start Linux in January as our new operating system. I'm a borderline geek that doesn't like Microsoft so Linux appeals to me :) Depending on how much I like it, I may switch the older system over to Linux and get the gaming system of my dreams. Shit that puts me more into the geek category now doesn't it? :D
