*I* need a best friend who is an IT person - specifically a network administrator.

Okay- so maybe we won't be best friends (who knows?) but I do have questions about NSFW sites at work etc.... I don't want to share my issue here in case MY network administrator has discovered me and is reading this.... Hoping someone will message me - not just someone who says, "I know a lot about computers."

Aha.
Believe that you are not posting this from office.
Lit is No.1 NSFW :D

I've been working in IT since before the Internet. I was an oddball, the only woman in a male dominated career. I took up and followed my Dad's career.
Currently, I work on the transport part of networking. Not so much the servers, although I do have a bit of Linux experience. I make sure the users can access the servers across the network. I work on routers, switches, firewalls, web proxys, and the DHCP/DNS services running on servers.
Yes, I can answer your question.

A web proxy is a type of security device. Nearly all of our internet traffic goes through it. When someone goes to an internet site, the web browser sends the request to the web proxy, not the Internet. The proxy will run the request through a list of blocked sites. Sex sites, hate sites, and other blocked sites will cause the proxy to send a blocked site screen to your web browser. If it's an acceptable web site, it will forward the request to the web site. It receives the reply, analyses it for viruses, malware and other nasties, then sends the reply to your PC.
This is the device that gets you in trouble!

Your best bet if you're going on Lit while at work is to use a personal device (phone or a tablet like I use) and connect to the company's guest wireless network if they have one. If they don't, you'll have to lunch at Starbucks.

Well do check your PM, you may find some pretty good information there.

i may be able to help as well. I know some things about that type of gear. JRaven is pretty much spot on. Typically the categorization of websites happens on the proxy and will not allow anyone out to them, if you can get out shows a pretty large hole in the system. It will log them but these devices create tons upon tons of logs. As she says your best bet is your own phone/pad/mac/laptop on the guest system. Typically the proxy settings there are much less strict.

the website filtering tends to occur more so in larger organizations... there are proxy servers that you can use it tends to hide where you are going and only appears that you are going alot to one site.
