Any free web hosting services like the old "Geocities"?

Yeah, as I recall, it was possible to create your own HTML files and upload them to create a decent custom website with minimum of fuss. Sadly Geocities is no longer active.

None of the free web hosting services at present offer the same level of "customisability", as far as I can tell. They seem to rely far too much on "site builder" tools which severely restrict what you can do with them (unless you pay, of course). Perhaps it's quite deliberate.

But I wonder if any of you can suggest any sites out there that are free and will allow me to simply upload my own HTML files? Or am I asking for too much?

Any suggestions/pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked out this one? I found it by googling 'free webhosting html' and it appears you can customize your free, ad-free site by uploading your own HTML files. There are some restrictions on the types of sites they allow (e.g. no "adult" sites, though I'd imagine they're talking about porn sites, and if you're intending on using this for your "romantica" writing at least in part, I bet you'd be fine).

I'm sure there are other hosting options out there as well, but like I said, that's just the one I checked out quickly.

I second SweetErika's suggestion. I had a webpage on Zumic for a while. It's a little more limited than some of the subscription sites, but youcan't beat it for free.

Thanks so much for that suggestion, SweetErika.

I'll try it out and let you guys know how it goes...

Many thanks to both you folks for your responses!

I have used google for web sites. Works fine. Free. You can also point domain names to google sites so you can make it look like a regular web site. Just my 2 cents. I have been out of the web business now for a few years... things change.

free webhosting

if its to post stories then blogger is quite good also agilityhoster does free webhosting if you know how to install and use wordpress even wordpress itself offers free blogger hosting.

Thanks for all your suggestions folks.

I really do appreciate you taking the time to reply to my query.

Incidentally, I've settled on wordpress... Just turns out to be the most straightforward option of them all...

But once again, many thanks for your suggestions...

I ran into similar problem a few weeks ago. Needed to host some stuff as a backup. I ended up using webs.com Their free service.

One of the problems that I ran into with some free hosting services was that they did not give domains. They would do the hosting for free, but you still had to register and pay for a domain, I know... it is one time payment (or some such), but all I wanted was a quick website for free, the specifics really do not matter.
